Hi!
I'm 13 weeks pregnant and hoping there might be some lady techs out there that have experience of working as a technician throughout pregnancy. And tips or tricks you found helped with expanding bump and the range of symptoms? Did expanding bump make core strength and stability while tuning an issue, while pregnant and upon return to work? How did you deal with your customer base in terms of letting them know/new customers/maternity leave etc? I'm considering not taking on new customers but I'm nervous about that!
Not my first pregnancy, but first as a piano technician. I never knew aversions could extend to inanimate objects ie pianos... 😅
Thanks in advance for any advice!!
Ella

Are you an analog (aural) or digital (ETD) tuner?

Hey,
I'm an aural tuner, although I have access to a tuning aid, which I may start using in parts to help with stamina and energy levels - will see how it goes!

There was a woman tuner in my area who kept working while pregnant but did not accept new customers at that time (I was looking for a tuner back then). You might want to see if you can find her and reach with question. As a father myself, I wish you all the best with your kid!

So your offspring may develop a particular affinity for tuning intervals which would likely come out later in life, due to the auditory exposure in the womb. I read an account of a professional cellist who's son grew up to be a conductor. One particular symphony he was working on at one point (I can't remember it at this point) he remarked to his mother that it was almost like he already knew the entire thing though he had only just started rehearsing it with the orchestra. His mother told him that it was the same symphony she was rehearsing at the time she was pregnant with him. Interesting that music/song played to the baby in the womb can help the baby have a more peaceful delivery - maybe I should play runs of intervals mid labour...😂 Thanks for taking the time to send the link across!

I have indeed found a tuner in your area who is on Maternity leave at the moment - I've sent her an email. 😊👍 Thanks again!

I was with Ed, then I realised my daughters would have kicked up big time if they did not like what was going on. Take care.

I read years ago about a cellist who kept playing throughout her pregnancy, and that this had positive effects on the baby before and after birth. It is reckoned that read to a baby in the womb is beneficial. There is this link about music and the unborn: https://www.aptaclub.co.uk/pregnanc...y-music-the-effect-on-unborn-babies.htmlPiano tuning of course is not the same as music. I wonder if any study has actually been done on its effects on the unborn. Aural tuners have been found to have an enlarged hippocampus, similar to London Taxi Drivers who have to memorise every street in the city and the routes between them, to get a license.

Thanks for the link - Like you say tuning is not quite the same but I do find the effect of music on unborn child really interesting and I love the idea that it will be surrounded by it. Surely tuning would have some effect though, even if its just as simple as interval familiarity from an early age but I haven't found any studies or information yet. I did speak to an audiologist because I was slightly concerned about risk of damage to babies hearing being faced with constant striking of notes at fortissimo level all day. She wasn't concerned but I do plan to make sure I give myself lots of quiet space at the end of the day!
