Interesting, to me, that powered professional monitors are creeping into the home stereo world. Anywho, a data point. BTW, Steve reviewed a pair Genelec monitors in a prior video.

Same here: to me studio monitors are more neutral, not biased towards a certain genre of music or audience preference.
Of course the room should not be too big since they are more focused to nearfield.
And also we might need to rethink regarding audio equipment: audio interfaces with balanced cables are not built for comfort and tend to be terrified to non-musicians, XLR cables may be more pricey as well as pre-amp output is needed if common living-room receiver is to be used etc. etc.

Hi all,

I've used the larger Focal Alpha 80s for more than 3-years now and these work very well with the MP11se and are as tonally neutral across the keyboard range as any speaker is likely to be. These are placed on separate stands immediately to each rear corner of the MP11se so that they overhang the keyboard up to the centre line of its top and angled slightly in towards the player.

This positioning also works very well for mid-field (approx. 6-10 feet/1.8-2.8m) listening to music and speech when fed from the pre-amp built-in to the very inexpensive (compared to Hi-Fi separates) Presonus Audiobox USB 96 interface (approx. $100/£75) which has balanced stereo outputs fed via inexpensive XLR (approx $10/£7.50 each) cables to the balanced XLR input of the speakers. Note that these speakers also have traditional unbalanced Phono type inputs for connecting to other audio equipment. Having tried both I would always choose the balanced XLR feed over the unbalanced Phono feed everytime!

Kind regards,

Tog
