While I don't know Ron or Action Piano, I can think of no reason why S&S would hire any outsider, let alone an independent tech. from Texas, to train anyone in their facility.

Please explain.

People sometimes seem to conflate their local dealer with the manufacturer they represent. I hear "Steinway this," and "Steinway that," when clearly it's not Steinway the manufacturer, but perhaps a local S&S dealer.

Well Rich, as far as using "outside" techs to advise Steinway, Joe Bisceglie the head tone regulator at NY they did get them to hire Bill Garlick to train field technicians in the factory and work in the background to help him get the factory to stop using the teflon bushing..

A bit later Joe B. wanted to bring me to NY to prepare some D's and B's with my tone regulation protocols. Joe Pramberger killed the idea. But not long afterward Pramberger lost his position as head of manufacturing.

Well yes. I should have chosen my words more carefully, Ed.

Certainly there are very well qualified people like Bill (what a good guy, too) and you who might help ANY company.

I just doubt that in this micro-industry that we operate in that a guy I haven’t heard of would have already been hired by S&S to train their staff in rebuilding. That doesn’t make sense.

If you live in the Bay Area, I can highly recommend Callahan Piano Service in Oakland, CA. They primarily rebuild Steinways and Mason & Hamlins. Their workmanship is superb. I had them rebuild a J. & P. Schiedmayer I owned, and it was a beautiful restoration. Yes, I know...why restore an old Schiedmayer, but I was in love with its tone and felt it was worth preserving. Callahan gave it a second life. I gave it to my sister when I bought my August Förster, so it lives on to give her joy.

I'm currently doing a video series with a Steinway B on my youtube channel. I'm cataloging and showing all the mistakes (mostly design) that Steinway make in their pianos and will conclude the series with a concert pianist playing on the rebuilt Steinway in my shop and later the client in his home with the known mistakes fixed. When i say mistakes, i'm not saying that the instrument is no good. Only that it's potential ( Tone and Longevity)was artificially limited. Copying the originals is actually a missed opportunity for an even better instrument. There are currently 16 videos and there will be much more.

Does Steinway have a RE-building staff? I didn't think the factory did rebuilds.

Steinway does rebuilds at their factory in Astoria, but I've read here more recently that they now subcontract rebuild work to other shops; however, I don't know if that's accurate or has been verified (I'm commenting in part because I'm curious about whether or not that's true).

Not an endorsement, merely a comment that Steinway does indeed now have a third party rebuilding arm.

I enjoyed an amazing tour of the PianoWorks restoration shop recently, with many thanks to Don and Sam Bennett. Without question surely they are in the top tier of that field.
