Question:

The Bass Notes on my Steinway A are starting to sound slightly 'mushy'
Is this something that can be adjusted by a technician or am I using too heavy on the use of the Sustenuto Pedal?

Also - one of my bass notes Eflat has a higher pitched after ring, once the note is played, anyone heard of this?
my tech says he can't hear it - which sort of worries me.
I went and played a M&H BB 2020 and i could hear it a little on that piano as well

any thoughts?
is it me? am I hearing things? over analyzing the sound?

Can you perhaps link to a recording of the problem notes/passages?

Have a short recording of the bass note- but trying to figure out how to get it to you or even on here.

If you have a google account, upload it to your Google Drive, then make the link public and copy the link here. That is an easy way to share music.

it's the B-Flat Note I am playing
I hear an afterring after the initial note is played

I played other bass notes so you can hear the difference
I only really hear it on the B-Flat consistantly - sometimes it's on the B-Natural

I have an 1887 A1 and I have exactly the same issue on exactly the same note - however, it can be tweaked so as to not happen. I believe the ringing is in one of the duplexes somewhere. I noticed that your Bb is not exactly in tune. In my case, I hear the ringing with the same state of tune as yours, but, with careful tuning, it disappears. Sounds like it's the partials around Eb6 or F6. Same thing on a couple of other bi-chords in the bass (but different ringing partials).

Paul.

Paul/Terminaldegree

I just found this link in PianoWorld
This makes me feel so much better reading this
I believe - what they are describing in this thread is what I am hearing wink

http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...loud-overtone-ringing-on-bass-notes.html

the good news is, IT'S NOT A PROBLEM, but a characteristic of a piano, esp Steinway's
