Yay! Another, "Is this piano any good" thread.

General impressions of a 1998 vintage Young Chang G-185? I haven't yet seen it in person as it's a 3-hour drive, but am planning on making the trip this weekend. I'm making an assumption that it's a G-185. The listing says it's 6', but doesn't specify a model. Mahogany finish. Manufactured in Korea, SN 120325. They're asking $6400

I played a much smaller, newish Young Chang baby grand at a Church a few years ago, and thought it played and sounded nice, despite being in the 5' size range. The low bass was rather thin, but to be expected in that size range.

I've also read both positive and negative things about Young Chang over the years, but that could be said of all brands.

My take on your question "is this piano any good"... it may well be, and very good. The only way to find out is to go look at it and play it.

The price sounds a tad on the high side to me, but not outrageous for a recognized name brand 6 footer, from the late 1990s. But there could be some room for price negotiations.

I'd definitely suggest having it inspected by a qualified piano tech before committing to buy.

Good luck!

Rick

That seems like a steep price for that piano. Most YC's that I've played were not fantastic instruments, and in fact, I don't think I've ever really played a great one. It could be a solid piano, but I'd try to get more info before driving 3 hours to see it. You could be 6 hours on the road for nothing.

That's pretty spendy for an inexpensive grand piano of that age, but with used pianos, condition is king. I'd guess it might have cost $11k when it was brand new. Be sure it doesn't have the expanding action bracket problem that some of the 1980s/1990s YC pianos had, or plan on having that repair done.

If it looks good in high-resolution pictures, and also sounds good via a recording, it would be worth it to have a tech inspection done before driving 6 hours to see one.

I'm going to make the trip anyway. A day away from the house in my convertible smile

It's at one of the Steinway Gallery stores, and I want to check out some Essex grands as well, plus there's a Kawai gallery just a few minutes away. It's worth the trip to see some other pianos coming from an area where my selection is pretty limited.

Saw a post in the PTG forums that the expanding bracket problem didn't affect YCs with serial numbers after 118xxx, so this one might be Ok

Sounds like fun - and potentially very productive.
