I just started recording pieces on this DP. The midi playback on the piano sounds fine (just like as played) but when I record to WAV and transfer to my computer the sound with headphones is disappointing. I play back using JRiver which provides excellent playback. I haven't tried it on my music system but suspect it will be similar.

Anything I am missing, settings?

thanks

Nope - I have fairly good Audio-Technica headphones. I guess I should check is if the midi playback on the piano and audio playback on the piano sound the same.

I am concerned the conversion to WAV on the piano is not so great.

Well, there's this binaural vs. regular stereo thingie happening.

By default the sound from the headphone socket is binaural and maybe the internal WAV recorder makes a regular stereo recording.

...or something like that. I don't have a Clavinova.

And then there's the usual volume issue i.e. recordings may seem quiet as the internal recorder must be able to handle you banging the keys with fff velocity without the recorded sound clipping.

Hey Drew,
Internally recorded audio files are usually at low volume. If You haven't yet try normalize the wav file after You've transfered it to your PC.
I recommend Ocenaudio it's free and easy to use smile

FWIW, i have read others posting about similar low playback volume on other Yami models.

I have also recorded internally AND to USB then played back, using 2 older models of Kawai, one older model of Roland, both midi & audio formats, and not experienced this problem ..... maybe its a Yamaha thing , or i guess with all the newer K & R models introduced since i purchased mine, maybe this is also now a K & R thing too, i dunno.

From the audiophile’s view, any idea how or why they came up with calling this process of fixing/improving volume of played back recording “ normalizing” ? I understand the need to avoid clipping, but the lingo sounds ..... not normal.

An interesting read :
Amplify vs Normalize

It goes into details and how you can tweak the post-processes on a musical track.

My understanding is that Yamaha record very low to make extra sure that there is no cliping in the sound.

thanks mareg - I did install Audacity and ran normalize on the file. It did help the sound, I also like that you can add catalog information to the recording.
