How does Rachmaninoff write a melody? 🎵

Check out my latest video in which I wade through the many sumptuous passages of his famous 2nd Piano Concerto discussing motifs, phrase structure and more than a few surprising connections…

Fascinating and beautifully/clearly explained as always. Talking about the first 1:30 of your video where you analyze how the three different parts of melody are used the first time the whole melody appears, would Rachmaninov have been very conscious about what you explain or would the melody just "come to him" and be analyzable the way you did afterwards?

Thank you so much!
I think considering the distinctive rhythmic identity and contour of each motif, he surely must have known that he was using them this way. What's more debatable are the supposed appearances which bookend the 2nd mvt, which could easily be coincidental.
