Help. I'm looking into buying a grand piano and will want to sell my Baldwin studio upright after I get the new one. I've looked everywhere I can think of, and still can't find a serial number. There is a paper label on the back that says made by Baldwin USA, and a list of patent numbers, but no serial number.

My original warranty has a handwritten serial number, which is the same as a number molded into the board. I know this is not right. When I put that number into a search, it tells me the manufacter date is "after 1994." I've owned the piano since 1977! I'm assuming the dealer couldn't find the serial number, either.

Any ideas where I might look next?
Thanks

Is this a Hamilton? Give me the number on the piano. I will tell you. Baldwin numbers their uprights and grands separately.

Hi, Joan --

I can't really tell where you looked in the first place, but Baldwin upright serial numbers are usually very apparent once you lift up the top of the piano. The back of the piano is also a common place. Where did you find the one "molded into the board"?

I think your number is right and your search was based on incorrect information. (Dealers always can find the serial number, it's how they keep track of their inventory.) Post the number and Curry will help you.

Here are some ideas:
http://www.pianoatlas.com/serial.html

I'd tend to believe the number on the warranty; that's important to the dealer. What is that number?

In 1977, most Baldwins started with serial number 217,853. Acrosonics started with 1,104,802.

Cy, Hamiltons, 248's, and 6000 verticals are numbered separately. In 1977 these pianos started at 312,534

Thanks, Curry. I forgot you have to look all over the book for those numbers...

The plate says Baldwin, not Hamilton or Acrosonic. The warrany says it is Style 806, Serial Number 1075536. This number is inside the piano near the top of the board, in the space between the bass and treble strings.

The dealer told me it is a studio upright rather than a spinet, but I've not seen that designation in any lists of Baldwin pianos.

It was made in 1976.

Thanks, Curry. I was pretty sure of the year because I bought it new at the beginning of 1977. I just thought a prospective buyer would like to have the serial number to do his/her own research.

Curry, do you have any other information besides the manufacture date? At the time I bought the piano, the dealer assured me it was a studio, not a spinet. In fact, he made that a major selling point. (I bought the piano because I liked the sound of it). Anyway, I've been reading Larry Fine's book and looking at some things on my piano, and it looks like it really is a spinet. I know that would affect the selling price, but don't know by how much.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

It's an 806. Is it 40" 42", or 45". Measure it from bottom to top.

It's 40". Also, it's a continental style. No legs under the front of the keyboard. Don't know if that makes any difference.
