Greetings Pianophilians,

I'm looking for a decent piano bench. I like to sit a little higher, so I need something that goes over 20", preferably 21-22 inch area. It needs to be sturdy and with a firm seat.

Any recommendations in the $100 range?

Thanks.

I would say that it's rare indeed to find a "decent" piano bench in the $100.00 range. Benches in that price range, when you find them, are inclined not to be reliably sturdy, even poorly made, and I doubt that you will even find an adjustable bench in that price range.

I would suggest that you search some websites that feature piano benches so that you have a more realistic idea of what "decent" will cost.

Regards,

These are very nice, I've had 2 over the years. They've gone up a bit in price. Still worth it.

When a quality adjustable bench from a well-known maker runs over $600.00 easily, my take on this is that you get what you pay for. Caveat emptor!

I have a the same adjustable leather CPS bench recommended by ebonyk as well as a Jansen adjustable artist’s bench that I use on different pianos in my house. In my opinion they both perform admirably although the Jansen is quite heavy and difficult to move.

I put small furniture sliders under the feet of my Jansen bench. The bench can just slide to the right place.

There are actually a fair number of adjustable benches in the $90-150 price range.

The problem with less expensive benches tends to arise when the pianist wants to raise the seat to its highest setting. Here is where the less expensive hardware becomes obvious, and most often, rickety.

I know because I have this bench, which cost $85:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072WMPXMM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It says it's not currently available, which is just as well because I do not recommend it! whome

If I could lower it about 1.5 to 2 inches, I bet it would be a great bench. But alas, I need it at its tallest setting, and as a result, it has started to sag a bit. I try to remember to rotate it, but yeah, I learned the hard way, you get what you pay for!

I have read so many people on PW posting that they are happy with their CPS Imports, so if I were the OP, I'd start with their benches and see what you can find.

Good luck!!

Have the Roland adjustable one. Decent quality.

Actually these benches are pretty good, I have no complaints. I've had to re-tighten the four bolts a bit every couple of years but it is still as good and as solid as new.

I have that bench. It's great. The legs are wood. I don't know why they have their crazy "rubber wood" description. It's good enough for me to use. I don't see the need for a $600 bench. I think this bench more than suits my needs and saves me money. It's not a $600 leather bench, but is an economical good choice IMO.

I have this one: https://www.thomann.de/se/thomann_kb_15bm.htm

The sitting cushion is not very thick, so I bought an extra one that I put on top. It is not a 150$ rubber wood bench with a waterproof cushion, but it suits me just fine. wink

PS. NOTE: 1. The piano is not included. laugh

I have one of the Amazon benches and have been quite pleased with it. The only assembly required was to attach the legs, which was easy. I tighten them once or twice a year, no trouble at all. I got mine in brown and it actually goes very nicely with my piano. Not a Jansen, but definitely serviceable, and the price was right.

I put a drop of torqloq on the nuts holding my stools together. They never budge.

I had a cheap bench for around twenty years. When one leg joint became loose it was time for a new cheap bench.

The new one cost around $80 IIRC. It is now four or five years old with no troubles.

But it might be hard to find an **adjustable** bench for under $100. Both of mine were non-adjustable.

I have a Jansen, as well, they weigh a ton!
