Posted on my colleague, Daniel Grimwood's FB feed today: "As the story goes, this is the piano Mendelssohn selected for his friend, the great singer Mary Postans. It lives at Ightam Mote".

The sound, to me, is akin to that of older Knabes and Chickerings that I played.

I tried to open the FB video and it said the content wasn't available. I did have to log in to FB. I tried a few times and got the same message.

I've wondered about the Mendelssohn brand. There was a lady in my area who has an older Mendelssohn upright for sale for $300. It looks like the cabinet has been refinished, but not sure about the insides.

Not that I need another old upright piano... smile

FB makes it difficult to share.
That was the URL.
You could try getting onto FB and searching for "Daniel Grimwood". It would be in his feed.

Regarding the piano, it is a grand piano, not an upright.

I recently met a lady who is the "Collections Manager" at Ightham Mote (a moated mediaeval manor house in Kent). She was telling me about this piano. The piano is a Stodart. See here:

This link is a biography of Mary Postans. I have to confess that I had never heard of her, but she seems to have been a superb singer. The Mendelssohn piano is not mentioned in this article, but I would guess that it might date from the 1830s. With such a date, I would be a bit surprised if it sounded a bit like the older Knabes and Chickerings Andrew refers to. But unfortunately I cannot access the Facebook page.
