Thanks for posting this! I've always liked Satie's music, but never knew anything about him and his quirky side.

Regarding the white foods - if I only had 3 minutes to eat a meal, cheesecake would definitely be it.

Everything I know about Erik Satie I learned from the BS&T album and from that Godawfully depressing commercial that started with the elderly woman complaining about how she can't take care of her dog, anymore. 50 years later and the memory of that thing still bums me out.

I don’t know if you caught it but there is mention at the end about her doing a book potentially aimed at beginners- there is a survey link soliciting data to shape the content.

At 3:23, are those powered sugar donuts she's eating? They are white.

My favorite daily activity would be horseback riding. Think I would skip the white food part.

It's funny because the French spend hours at conversation during their meals. 3 minutes for meals and no talking is outrageous.

Getting outdoors for regular exercise and having "boring" downtime for inspiration are pretty sound in terms of modern holistic psychology. Sleeping with one eye open, not so much.

I love Satie!

There's only one cheesecake - the one from NY. Everything else is fake!

#TakeItEasy folks - that was just (attempted) humor - don't get all serious over cheesecake.

I have not heard/learnt Satie pieces except the Gymnopedie #1 and Gnossienes #1 but maybe it's time to.

A man must love a thing very much if he practices it without any hope of fame or money, but even practice it without any hope of doing it well. Such a man must love the toils of the work more than any other man can love the rewards of it.

I'm having a hard time thinking of many foods that are white. Even cheesecake is more of a cream color. White bread without the crusts? Bananas (without the peel, of course)? Egg whites? Tofu? I suspect Satie was enjoying his joke...

If you ever get a chance, go see Maisons Satie in his hometown of Honfleur, France. We spent a wonderful day there touring the museum.

The other Gymnopedies and Gnossiennes are essential listening but I would also encourage anyone to check out some of his other works. As a good starting point check out the romantic, sentimental waltz of 'Je te veux', the ragtime-inspired 'Le Piccadilly', the witty and irreverent 'Sonatine bureaucratique' (with its pastiche of Clementi's Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1), as well the more serious Nocturnes and many more experimental pieces. One of my favourites and closer in style to the Gnossiennes is 'Petite Ouverture à danser'.

Here's a good introduction for anyone wishing to know a bit more about him:

Erik Satie: a life less ordinary
