I just hit upon this video



Apparently the first audio recordings were made by Eduard-Léon Scott de Martinville in Paris which he already patented in 1857. This is 20 years before Edison "invented" his Phonograph and 30 years before he patented it.

And mr. de MartinVille apparently even added a time code so that we can correct the playback speed as well

Edison was the whole package - inventor, manufacturer, promoter. And he wasn't afraid to go to court to protect his patents. Whether or not he was first to invent, he was the most successful at getting product to market. And part of what he was selling was Thomas Edison. Same thing with Henry Ford, who was a real kook - but I still drive a Ford truck...

@Sam, I just wanted to point out that audio recording had been patented already at least 30 years before Edison's patent and illustrate how it was done. I did not want to discuss Edison.
