A colleague is semi-interested in getting a grand. SHe knows someone who wants to sell a 60 year old Ludwig. Does anyone know anything at all about these pianos. I told her I'd at least try and find something out. Thanks, guys.

What is the price of this Ludwig grand?

They stopped manufacturing pianos under this name in 1953. I seen a few used Ludwig grands of this age and they were poorly maintained and not worth much at all.

However, if this piano has been maintained, it may be enjoyable to certain players. Still though, not worth much.

Thanks, Christopher. My friend says it is about 60 years old. It has been in the same family, but no telling what kind of condition it's in. My impression is that it hasn't been played much. Were they decent pianos to start with? Were they a U.S. piano? If she gets seriously interested I will go play it for her. She has no experience on a Grand. I want her to come play my Estonia so she has something to go by. I appreciate your input.

Ludwig pianos were manufactured in New York and later in Chicago. So yes, they were US made. I believe they were of average build quality. A techinician may be able to comment in more detail.

I can tell you this, if she plays your Estonia and then plays the Ludwig, she will most likley cringe as it may be very painful.

If it hasn't been played much, it probably hasn't been tuned regulary, which is not good for the piano.

Good luck!

You need a tech to evaluate any old piano. One Ludwig grand I saw did not have a double-repetition action, so its action was no better than an upright's. If you don't understand that sentence, you should understand why a tech is necessary!

I understand the sentence. I just wanted to know what anyone knew about the pianos for a friend. Having a tech look at it is the advice I gave her after Christopher Smith's helpful response.

Hey! Cunningham was a Ludwig dealer in the 1950's - at least our letterhead from that time lists them as one of our brands - I personally don't remember ever seeing one.

Good advice, Chris!

I'd be willing to bet it's a *beater*, but at least I did a little research for her. Thanks everyone.

I've seen several Ludwig uprights and grands. They were a very middle of the road piano, maybe a bit more solid than average but the tone quality was weak.

My guess is that it is closer to 70-75 years old. Any piano of that vintage is likely to have pinblock issues/soundboard/bridge issues unless it was in a very well controlled RH.
