I'm considering purchase of a Kawai K-80E. Asking price is $6,000.

It's been nearly impossible for me to find information about this model! Lots out there about K-8 and K-800, but nothing on K-80.

Technician says it's in great shape. I've verified that it was purchased new in 2004 and has only one owner. There's a dampchaser installed.

I'll be playing the instrument tomorrow to see if i like the sound, but I want some feedback on this instrument and the pricing.

Once I make a purchase, I'll be selling my Yamaha NU1 (circa 2016) that is in great condition.

Thanks!!

It was the precursor to both the models you mentioned, and used their ABS-Styran action as the composite material of the time. Although I’ve never laid hands on a K-80, I quite nearly bought a K-60 in my upright piano search, 15 years ago. I ended up selecting something I liked a little better (which was more expensive), but it seem to be a darned good piano at the time.

If you know the year that the piano was actually made from the serial number, you could go to the Piano Buyer used piano section, “how much is it worth”, article, to get a rough idea of how much to depreciate the price of that used piano compared with the street price of the current K-800. You probably want to take the SMP price of the new piano -25%, as a rough starting place for a street price. I’d also check eBay listings, all of craigslist, and PianoMart to see if you can find any “comps“.

Here's the K-80 brochure

Also - the K-80 will not have the Millenium III carbon fiber action found in the current K series uprights.

Hi WDM
Welcome to the forum!

You don’t mention if this is a private sale or if from a dealer; that information will impact the.price with the private sale being cheaper. One question? Was the tech inspection by a technician you hired? It should be rather than a tech employed by the dealer.

I would recommend that you test drive a piano before you have a tech inspection. Every piano is so different that there’s no reason for an inspection if you don’t like the sound or the touch.

Take your time and play as many candidates in your price range as you can find.
