I've listened to this a million times and have only just now noticed this. grin I would've thought he'd surely have this memorized!

(5:04)

This might be the only page turn I've ever heard in a studio recording. Share some more if you know any.

Years ago I heard a recording of Mozart that I know for certain had a burp in it...I'm sure I saved it in a youtube playlist somewhere, but I couldn't tell you what it is or get even close. I don't even remember the pianist or the piece or anything. But I know for a fact there was a burp. I rewound it and listened multiple times.

Is that for sure a page turn?

I wouldn't have noticed anything myself, and even looking for it.... I had to listen 3 times to hear it, and I can't identify it as a definite page turn, but if you and/or others say you're sure it is, I'll believe it.

(And I'll say, great get!)

I agree. It could be just him shifting around in his bench.

Can be a page turn but there's the same sound at 5:07 too.
So it's twice. Did he turn to the wrong page first? :-) ha ha

I'm not so sure it's a page turn can be something else

It's the same turn, just done slowly.

Can never not hear it. I prefer the MSG performance(s) anyway. wink

Not a page turn, but--when I first heard this MANY years ago, it sounded much clearer--I wonder what happened? Too much rock and roll? too many years?

Here is a big noise (I swear it was much bigger 47 years ago) in a very well-known recording--never saw it mentioned anywhere.

at 5:12--turn up the volume.

It USED to sound like somebody hitting a music stand. I think they could have edited it out at the time.

Huh.

I remember in one of my parents' Schnabel LPs of a Beethoven sonata that I listened to many times, there was a very clearly audible knock on the door (if I recall correctly, it was even a double -- i.e. "knock-knock"). To this day, I can't listen to that sonata when it gets to that part without thinking/anticipating that "knock-knock"!

OK, I think I found a YouTube post of that Schnabel I remembered with the "knock-knock". At 11:37 in this video:

I have Gilels’ almost-complete box set of Beethoven sonatas. I think when he repeats the exposition of the Pathetique sonata, you can hear a couple pages quickly flip back. It’s been a while since I listened, so I’ll have to report back later today.

.....About Gilels/Pathetique:
Very possible, of course, but just FWIW: I checked a couple of the recordings on youtube and I don't hear anything like that (maybe it was another recording), and I did hear him play the piece "live" and he didn't use the score.

Not a page turn but there is a recording in which I can hear the pianist breathing and it is strong enough to bother me when I listen.

For the Schnabel recording, I like to imagine who was knocking on the studio door, and what the followup might have been that didn't get into the recording, such as:

"Mr. Schabel, you're wife's on the phone...she wants you to stop at the A&P on the way home from the studio..."

or:

"Hey Arthur -- the pizza's here! Your share is two bits!

etc....

about the ballade, yes it's clearly audible. It could be a page turn. But the page turns in my own recordings sound much louder and slightly longer. And I would expect a lot of page turns in this piece so where are the other turns then?

BTW nice playing. It does not disturb me.
