Hello. We are aquiring with the purchase of aour "new" home a Kimball baby grand. I believe it to be about 25 years old. It looks to be in good shape but I won't know until it's tuned. Any thoughts on the value. I plan to ask the tuner as well.

The piano you describe is not considered a high level of piano. It's one of the better-known American brands of the past but not an expensive musical instrument. It also depends on how it was cared-for over the years and, in particulat, how big is the piano (5', 6', etc).

Thank you Paul. I was curious to see if I could sell it (since we'll have 2) and just pay for new carpet OR new siding. It seems that neither may be the case! It'll be fun to do duets with my daughter on her little spinet for a time anyway...

That thought had occured to me. As I mentioned we're moving and our "new" house is a 124 year old farm house that needs WORK. If the baby grand can help finance that, that's the way we'll probably go. If I thought the baby grand was equal in value to the spinet (within a few hundred dollars) of course I'd keep the Kimball. Who among us wouldn't want a baby grand?!!! It may all come down to what the piano tuner tells us. It may look pretty but sound really nasty...I really hope not though! Merry Christmas

One question on how to measure the piano. From what point to what point? They come in increments of feet don't they? (5'6" as an example)

The length of a piano is measured from the front of the keyboard to the farthest point of the "tail." So if you are seated at the piano, the measurement is made in a direction straight ahead of you.

I'd opt for the baby grand over the spinet.
Or sell both and look for an upright or grand.

I haven't found a spinet I liked. I would even refuse one if someone offered me a spinet for free. IMO none of the spinets can even come close to a bigger instrument with regards to sound or action. Sorry to tell you that.
The smallest vertical piano I would go for is a studio size, and it would still have to have some quality in terms of workmanshiop, sound, action etc.
Pls. read Larry Fines Book "The Piano Book",
read what he has said in his books on spinets.
Very informative and helpful book for people making buying and selling decisions on new and used pianos.
