The "Great American Songbook" Themed Recital will be open for submissions July 1, 2021, and go "live" July 15th.
The Great American Songbook is the loosely defined canon of American popular songs and jazz standards of the first half of the 20th century, principally created for Broadway theatre, musical theatre, and Hollywood musical film in the United States, but also sheet music publishers like Tin Pan Alley.
Think broadway shows, musical films, early jazz and blues, even early rock and roll. The cut-off dates are about 1900 to 1959. This includes music as diverse as Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter.
There are two collections of music that do an excellent job of presenting great music from the period:
"The Great American Songbook: The Composers"
"The Great American Songbook: The Singers"
both published by Hal Leonard
The rules:
1) You must decide if your choice fits the theme.
2) Any skill level! This is the Adult Beginners Forum, after all.
3) Duplicate pieces will be allowed, since there is hardly a standard way to perform these pieces.
4) Multiple submissions are allowed, for instance several pieces with a similar theme or from the same composer or musical. Be creative!
