Just received my new Shigeru Kawai SK7, but the spring at the top of the lyre when pressing the damper pedal squeaks. I think it is due to it being misaligned as per this photo:

I tried rotating the rod and pushing it slightly but it keeps moving back to the offset position- I can wait a month for the first tuning but it is rather annoying. Is it related to the installation of the lyre after moving? Any thoughts?

If its new call the dealer and request a fix. How much did you spend on it? (Rhetorical).

I had a similar issue with my Seiler. Should be an easy fix. My tech added a very thin piece of felt in between so that there is less friction and less hard surfaces to rub against each other and make noise.

That rod is in the exact same position on my SK7.

Have your piano dealer deal with this issue. If you try something yourself it could impact the warranty. I’m very surprised this passed their quality control process. It shouldn’t have left the factory like this. Could it have been damaged in shipment?

I may be totally wrong, but isn't Kawai sending Japanese technicians anymore with respect to new Shigerus (Covid??)?

I know this is an old thread - but for the benefit of anyone else in future who may be searching pianoworld for similar issues: I recently bought a brand new GC1 direct from Yamaha. The rods also do not exactly hit the centre of the felt pads as per the OP's picture. However I had a similar issue with creaking/squeaking developing after a few weeks and just after my first tuning. I thought I had traced it too to the location of the spring. Technician came by recently and realized that the two backstay rods were misaligned on the horizontal plane (the axis parallel to the keyboard) at factory, and over more and more use this was creating creaking noises (which sounded very close in proximity to the spring too).

@Ben after the first tuning it was adjusted but now 2 weeks after my second tuning it has returned, just as I was about to make a recording! I've isolated it to the spring(tried a piece of felt between the rod and it didn't help). How did they fix it for you? Shigeru is 1-2 years behind on the MPA visits thanks to COVID.

Please PM me with the serial number of your piano, and the name / number of your local piano tuner.

This can be stopped completely - and is rarely caused by the spring, but something else.
