I noticed this the other day. The piano is less than a year old and had its first tuning and regulation in my house about 5 months ago with a technician sent by the Kawai store. I am guessing it happened during the assembly process in Japan. It’s still under warranty. Should I get in touch with the piano store for a repair or is it not an issue? http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/galleries/3103057/split-by-wood-screw.html

The crack is appears to be non structural touch rail. On a used piano I'd ignore it, but on a new piano it should be replaced.

If the screw is holding, I would not judge this a material defect. Some things are best left alone when there is no benefit to the "improvement".

Thank you both for your replies. I appreciate it.

The good news is, to my surprise, I received a PM from KawaiDon from Kawai America who must have seen the post and reached out so he can see what can be done about the crack on the piano. I’m delighted and impressed with the courtesy and professionalism! I’ve been nothing but delighted by the piano and now here is an additional reason that I’m happy I bought the K-500

That is good news that Kawai are checking for a solution. It's a new piano, it should be repaired no questions asked!

The new rail is on the way to a local technician, who will install it.
