Hi everyone,

I was offered $11k out-the-door price for a new k500 with bench, 1st tuning, including taxes and delivery (100 miles from dealer). I’m in California.

Do you think this is a fair price? If not, can you offer any tips on negotiating and what a good price would be? Thank you.

$11K for the total package seems reasonable. Do you have a breakdown of the costs? (i.e., the piano, bench, sales tax, tuning, and long distance delivery) The dealer should be able to itemize ALL of these costs for you.

According to PianoBuyer the MSRP of the K500 is $15,295, and the SMP (Suggested Maximum Price) is $13,990. If the piano and bench are costing you $9,800 that would represent 30% off the SMP - which is a fair price.

Another way of looking at this is to compare it with the price in Europe. In the end it is the same K500 from the same factory in Japan. In the EU, the stated prices for the Kawai K series pianos are much closer to the 'real' price, which you can find on the web. I.e. there is almost no room for negotiating, and the dealer will only chip things like transport (if easy and not far), a tuning, a chocolate bar, or a pat on the back.

The K500 costs the equivalent of almost 10k USD, including 21% sales tax, in the Netherlands ( https://www.oostendorp-muziek.nl/kawai-k-500-e-p-messing-piano-kopen ) . That is not far from the 11k USD mentioned in the US, which includes a long transport/traveling distance for tuning.

I disagree that the price in Europe is relevant or even the mention of VAT. We have quite a few embedded taxes and compliance costs, not just sales tax, making those types of comparisons incomplete.

It is interesting how prices vary in different markets, but does not always prove useful. US pricing is less transparent than most markets, which is why these questions from consumers are so common, and we also see some notable regional differences within the US.

I too disagree. Freight differences, taxes, cost of doing business, etc. all affect different markets.

And manufacturers have differing margins in different markets.

One other note:

PianoBuyer's pricing information is only valid in North America, that is, the US and Canada.

In normal times you're a bit high but not bad. K500's on the west coast typically sell for $9k-10k pre tax for the Piano plus delivery and first tuning. But they're in high demand now.

add in long distance delivery (and a bench) and $11K seems consistent.

Carey-You were right, it was $9800 for the piano and bench, and everything else was tax and delivery. One tuning was thrown in as “free”, but I imagine that it’s built into the $9800. tuning, action regulation, and voicing will also be done by the dealer before they deliver to me, and that’s also “free”.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in. It seems like the price is ok..I’m not getting a deal, but I’m also not getting taken advantage of (well, at least not by THAT much).

I’ll keep looking around and see if there any better offers.
