I love to improvise. Kids love to improvise. I tried it today, and I put her in F major and told her to play quarter notes and I would accompany what she did. She did great, and I think she loved it. That's so exciting! I'm glad to hear this.

...but what about the actual *music* which is not the printed paper but *sound* (and timing) that one must hear and feel separately from the printed paper... Yes! Very important to think about the sound, too, and not just the visual. (Speaking to my younger teaching self.)

That video by Robert at Living Pianos on rhythm is what I do! (see my above post). But, I don't have a video series. And I do Jingle Bells or Math Had a Little Lamb, a simple 5 note melody that the student learned at the beginning of lessons. So we can sing along to each other.
I may try his version of playing all the notes the same note value.
Rhythm gives music meaning. He's right!
Learning as I teach.

Brinestone, during my lesson last week I was playing through and had trouble on a couple of sections. My teacher had me stop and play two measures at a time, slowly, one hand then added two measures, both hands, &c. Basic, obvious stuff that no duh, I should totally know after two damn years, but apparently I've been skipping the details. The whole time she was counting aloud and had me do so as well.
Then it was like lightning, I remembered your thread and I realized oh my god this is totally me! Kind of embarrassing. I should know better. I related it to my teacher and she was instantly agreeing and commiserating with you. Just wanted to drop in and leave this here.
Have a great day, all.

Have a great day, all. I often help students with counting, even more advanced students (because the counting gets harder). As long as you didn't ask if you could just forget about the counting, I think you're good.
