I presently own a 7 year old Kawaii upright and just inherited a 34 year old Yamaha upright piano. Neither has seen hard use. Piano is not my primary instrument and I don't know which is considered a better piano. I can't compare them side by side the way I do with my more portable primary instrument, but from memory they seem to have very similar sound. I can't keep both, so which piano do folks reccommend that I keep? If this makes a difference, the Yamaha would have to be moved 500 miles if I keep it.

How tall are the two uprights? If about the same height, I'd keep the Kawai and sell the Yamaha; at 34 years of age it's going to start needing some repairs soon if not needing them already. If they're much different in height, I'd keep the taller one. That's assuming you want to keep the best piano yourself as opposed to getting the most money in a sale.

See if you can find out who last tuned the Yamaha, and ask them about its condition.

In almost every case, I'd pick the piano that's 24 years newer...

If all else is equal (and I'm not saying it is) surely this makes a difference in terms of expense and convenience.

FWIW Depending on how they sounded I'd probably keep the Kawai.
