I enjoyed it with the backing track!

I finally got 100% on 'Mexican Hat Dance', and luckily I did it with no missed or red notes.

I found the key eventually and it was to allow my hands, wrists and arms free rein to do what ever they wanted and not to let my brain get in the way.

What I love about PM is the diversity in the exercises which means that I now have a relaxing 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little star' in 5 keys as my next task.

I do however realise that this is probably the calm before the storm

Just did Arabia - wasn't too bad. I'm terrible at reading time so the rhythm based exercises following it are going to slow me right down I'm sure.
Loving having this for structured practice.

I think that 'Arabia' will always be a major landmark in the PM journey due to Sarah's opening post when she created this wonderful thread.

I’m sure that I made a post on this thread about 'Irish Jig' but I can’t find it.

I’m pretty sure that it was very similar to yours.

It’s another one of those Piano Marvel landmarks.

Only 2 tries? I needed 33 tries, but I still think it's a beautiful song.

I played it countless times in practice mode and only used the assess mode when I could play it in a relatively relaxed manner. I had noticed that it has been brought up so I paid extra attention to getting it right
I haven't had a chance to read through the thread from the beginning yet. Are you still using PM these days Sarah ?

My ultimate dream when I started Piano Marvel (4 years ago) was to be able to read notes. It took me 4 years and now I can do it, not fast and smoothly but at my pace.
Due to my handicap I can no longer handle method and technique in PM after level 4, it is just too fast. But I did learn the basics in PM and that's why I upload songs in PM that I can handle. And as a reward for myself I make a video of it, I like to do that. Instead of a cup on the shelf, I can post a video. Very motivating, and I always learning new things like in a method book. win-win

At least from what I have seen here, we rarely talk about the Sight Reading Tests in this Piano Marvel thread.
Do you folks take them very often?
How have your scores correlated with the level that you are at in Technique and Method?

My biggest issue is that if I start out at the same level as I finished at the previous time I took the test, I get the dreaded XXX (like on Family Feud) pretty quickly and actually end up with a lower Sight Reading score.

So a lot of times I will just start out at the 200 level and work my way up from there.

What has been your experience? Do you like the tests or avoid them?

I use it purely as a reference point as opposed to a learning tool.


My highest SASR is 287 which is from about 6 months ago.


I haven’t taken one since because I have no reason to believe that I can beat it at the moment. Other aspects of my playing have improved but I don’t think that the abilities required for this test have. I always worry that pieces will be repeated and that I will not get a true indication of my ability.

I also find it quite nerve wracking

It is a bit nerve-wracking, but you can use it to gauge your progress. I'm surprised you aren't taking it at least once a week, and it can be rewarding when you best your prior high score.

And there lies my problem. It would be rewarding if I’ve beaten my high score but devastating if I haven’t

I’m now at a point where I won’t take another until I’m 100% sure that I can beat it.

About the SASR test. I am experiencing a strange phenomenon. As long as I faithfully did method and technique every day, my SASR score went up proportionally. Since I'm only focusing on learning 1 upload piece of my own, my SASR is only half the previous score. While I still learn a lot, because they are higher level pieces. Strange....
