I think there's little to be gained from recommendations. You have to try 'em for yourself.

So I can only recommend that you try some headphones at a shop (if possible).
If not, buy some online, try them, and return them if you don't like them ... and repeat as necessary.

. . . Do you have a budget? A price range?

. . . A preference for closed-back or open-back phones?

. . . A preference for "on-ear" (smaller cups, rest on your ears) or "around-ear" (larger cups, rest on your skull)

There are dozens of old threads, and not too many new headphones. So the old recommendations are probably still relevant.

As MacMacMac says, different people have different preferences. And one person's:

. . . "These headphones are like a vice on my skull"

is another person's:

. . . "These headphones are comfortable for hours of practice."

Sigh! I cycled through a few headphones before landing back to where I started. As Mac and Charles advise above - it's really only you who can recommend to yourself and "finally" decide.

My cycle was
Grado RS1e (great sound, uncomfortable though) ->
Bose QC (OK sound, didn't like noise cancellation, was comfortable) ->
BeyerDynamic DT 990 Pro (everything was great, but somehow I didn't just "feel connected to" the sound) ->
a very very old (with worn out earpads) pair of Grado SR60 (again, great sound, uncomfortable)

--> back to Grado RS1e, on which I am now shopping for and trying to fit some comfortable earpads. Trial and error in progress.

I think if you follow some general recommendations like "go for open air vs. closed", "high impedance may not always be necessary" etc. etc. (I believe Sweetwater has a great article/buying guide for starters) and try out some for yourself at a suitable location you will find the right one. I don't know if there's any store that would let you try Grados and some other headphones but the trip will be worth it!

Most important is that they are comfortable. If they don't fit nice you won't wear them.

Sennheiser HD598. Neutral(ish), easy to drive, comfortable on pretty much every head and durable. I have used these nearly every day for a decade and the still look new.

The HD650 (or any of its siblings) are better sounding, but require a better headphone amp to sound their best and are not as comfortable for most people. I'm not sure how powerful the amp is in your keyboard, but I know my Yamaha p121 doesn't put out enough juice for me to like them as well as my 598 from it. Through my Atom https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-amp/ amp, the sound is incredible. Best I've ever heard and I've been around the block on this. Of course the 598 sound better through the amp as well, but the difference isn't as pronounced. There is an amp made that is Taylor made to EQ the 650's mid bass bump and restores the low end. That would be interesting, but I just can't see buying another amp for a questionable potential improvement.

Thanks all.

Budget was up to £300. No preference for closed or open other than overriding priority was accurate sound reproduction.

Once again, I really appreciate all the responses, thank you very much smile

I really like my Sennheiser HD600's. That said, they're reknown for being neutral, if there's an area of your spectrum you think your piano would benefit from more, there are some Sennheiser's and other headphones with more bass, or whatnot.

I had been a fan of HD598 for years, until I got the HD58X, which are a step above and more in line with HD600 and HD6XX/650 (same cans, just different name) but do not need an amp, so give you best of both worlds. Got mine at $150. The HD598 are still very good, but they are not totally neutral, they have a mid-bass bump that bothers me with some (warm) pianos. The HD58x are very similar to the HD600, which are one of the gold standards for neutrality. Having said that don't expect massive differences between these 3 phones, they all sound very similar...
Ah, and by the way, testing cans in shop is close to useless without a piano... That's been my experience. Even when listening to a recorded piano. You really need to test them with a piano (e.g. have a return option) or trust someone that has tried enough of them and hopefully has similar tastes as you...

I have AKG K702 reference headphones. Like them, detailed sound, can be a bit quieter with underpowered equipment though. Seen them multiple times on sale last year for less - list price is USD 350, the sale price was between 220-275.

While you are absolutely correct (as you are most of the time), recommendations helped me in the past to create a shortlist to pick from smirk

+1 for beyerdynamic dt990. These sell for under $200.

Open back have a more natural, unconfined sound, and are easier to wear for hours at a time. Only reason I know of to not get open back is if it must be absolutely quiet around you.

Comfort is not only fit but also if they stay cool. Most headphones use fake fur and pleather (afaik) and get hot easily esp on a warm day. I dislike this a lot.

Yes, very detailed sound, quite quiet (they works when I dial the volume of my DP at 100%), but Amazon France proposes them at 130€ ($110) ! ($260 by Amazon US)

Anyone has opinions on Sennheiser hd6xx vs hd 58x?

As my cheaper headphones cord connection broke twice I decided to get something better, and have already ordered the hd6xx on drop.com, but I wasn't aware of the hd58x when I ordered.

These look interesting as well, they are cheaper, and probabaly could do without a headphone amp, being 150ohm instead of the hd6xx's 300 ohm, so that would make them alot cheaper in the end. But how do they compare, especially for piano?

If interesting I might still be able to change my order.
