I've been playing a little popular music lately, but, of course, I am missing the rest of the band. I thought it would be fun to find recordings (and the sheet music to go along with them) where the piano is missing and I could fill in. However, if this exists, I don't know what it is called and can't find anything similar. Maybe the best I can do is buy sheet music exact transcriptions and play over the band's pianist, but I was wondering if anyone knew of sort of a "piano karaoke" book/CD set that is more what I am looking for.

For classical music, there is a website ‘Music Minus One’ where you can be the pianist with an orchestra.

SO I did an internet search for something similar with pop music and found the following on Google Play:
Big Book of Backing Tracks’ which seems to be what you want. Caveat: I haven’t tried it.

Apple seems to have similar apps: search for backing track

Music minus one! What a great invention!! This is a YT example of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto no. 1. It is great fun to listen to it, even without playing (way too difficult for me), because I can "hear" the pounding piano sounds in my head.

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

Here are lots of backing tracks for popular music. Pity they don't show what the piano should play when, but once you figure that out, this should work fine.

Thanks so much! "Backing tracks" must be the term I was looking for. I found a lot of the opposite--piano minus the vocal, so you could sing along. I'll check these out.

And to add--I found these on YouTube from Animisha's link, and the exact song that has been plaguing me was there! The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby. It has a terrific piano part, but it isn't the same without the drums. And thanks, Dogperson, for the Music Minus One idea and the other resources. Playing with an orchestra could be a great goal!
