Thought I'd post @Hakki's link to this recording here and thank him for bringing it to my attention with his post.

https://soundcloud.com/user420806068/soundchecksk2rmebabyface1lineaudiocm4

Why?
  • The piano is seriously "in tune". It reminds me of how Bill Garlick's personal Steinway A sounded when I did a house concert on it.
  • The piano is voiced beautifully, or at least to my taste. It has that silvery quality of the Shigeru Kawai that I remember from playing an SK-7 in concert.
  • On a topic outside piano technology, the recording shows what can be done with $1000 investment in a pair of good microphones, something to hang them on, and a good digital audio interface. It was made with a pair of Line Audio CM4 small condenser cardioid mics; I use the OM1 omnis from the same manufacturer. To my ears they give a very natural, unhyped recorded sound slightly sweetened. The interface was an RME Babyface. IMO you can't go wrong with RME. I use an older RME Fireface 8000 bought used, and the sound is at least equal to what one gets from the newer one used on this recording. Bottom line - $1000 today gives you a recording - with a well tuned/prepped instrument and a bit of thought to microphone placement - that equals or better what came out of the major studios 10 years ago... in fewer words, good enough.

Good Day to All.

Ah, lovely. Thank you for posting the link. Such a nice piano sound, very easy on the ear. Is the music Couperin or Scarlatti?
