Thought I’d have a play with Spitfire Audio’s free BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover sound pack.

Unfortunately it doesn’t come with a stand alone player so seems it can only be invoked as a DAW plugin and somehow requires a Native Instruments Kontact player too.

Can anybody recommend a free or demo DAW that works with BBCSO Discover?

If you just want to play with BBCSO live, you can use VSTHost https://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm to run it, or any other VSTs (like Spitfire's Labs products), and play them from a keyboard.

FYI, I believe Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra uses their own app and does not require Kontakt.

I use the DAW - Reaper
https://www.reaper.fm/

with the "Reaper Template" "Discover Templates"
https://www.spitfireaudiothepage.com/posts/discover-templates

Allows you to record all the instruments of the orchestra with all their different techniques (long, spiccato, pizzicato, tremolo, etc.) each one on its own track.

Reaper is a DAW that uses very little CPU resources, very powerful and easy to use.

Cakewalk by BandLab is free and excellent. And, it doesn't have Reaper's annoying 'this is not free" pop up at the beginning. It should be able to host most VST plugins.

I have Reaper, and it hasn’t any annoying popup, but it is purchased $60 as it ought to be if really used.

But, I have to admit that with the free Cakewalk by BandLab, there is less of incentive to purchase a DAW like Reaper even if it has a low price.

There are too things I dislike about Cakewalk by Banlab. 1/ it install a BandLab assistant which starts at the beginning of the session as if the session startup wasn’t slow enough (where do many software provider get the idea to launch anything at the startup and not when we really need the program ?). 2/ sometimes, Cakewalk desactivate and we need to reactivate in the BandLab assistant. It is perhaps the first free software with a demo mode !!
