Hello,

We are looking at a pre-owner digital baby grand made by Weber (2010) asking price is 1500. This is a piano for my son who is entry level and he is playing for leisure with a teacher 2x a week.

1. I know this isn’t a Yamaha but those are at a higher price point so I am wondering if I can get guidance around value for this piano and

2. Aside from testing keys and petal what should I be looking at when buying a used digital piano from a person vs a store.

There is really no standard valuation for digital pianos. They are basically the same as used electronics. A working DVD player from 2010 probably is $10, no matter if the owner paid $500 before.

I see this auction in 2016 that ended at $530 [1]. If it has weighted keys and all the keys work properly, and if the cabinet looks nice, offer them what you think is fair. I'd suggest $200. If the owner wants $1,500, good luck to them.

And of course, for $1500 you could get something quite nice and new, likely with a better sound, keybed, polyphony, etc. I agree with redfish1901, a 10 year old digital piano is no $1500, especially an off brand like Weber. I'd suggest that it's outperformed by $600-700 new pianos (if not as attractive) so you would definitely ask for a price less than that. Many sellers balk because "they paid so much to begin with" but as redfish says, DP's go obsolete very quickly. A PC that cost $5000 10 years ago would be worth almost nothing today.

$1500 would be way too much for a 10 year old DP, even from a top tier brand such as Yamaha or Kawai, IMHO. I wouldn't spend more than $500 and that too after making sure it works well and that your son likes the action and the sound enough that he will enjoy playing that piano for quite some time.

Yes, the price is all wrong. But forget the price. I wouldn't buy a no-name piano. And I wouldn't buy a ten-year-old piano.

I'd stay with the major brands. And I'd look for a new piano, or one less than five years old.

When you say that the Yamahas are high-priced ... consider that Yamaha (and Kawai and Roland) have pianos in every price range ... from $400 or $500 up to $10,000+.
