Hi all.

My petrof 125 sounds just like this one

https://youtu.be/BK_UFnOxxqQ

Whats the issue with this piano?
Is it the tuning problem, is it the voicing problem or are the hammers to be replaced?

First, it is out of tune. A good tuning with stable unisons might make a great difference.

Secondly the hammers need voicing. They are brighter than I would like. But Yamahas are bright, aren’t they? So I would not expect much improvement.

I find the hammers to be excessively bright being the primary problem.

Thank you for your replies. Indeed the sound is too bright, but there are some pianos that sound bright but are great. This one sounds inconsistent and boxy too, like mine. I was thinking if tuning and achieving a consistent timbre throughout would have made the piano sound good?

This is the same piano and sound too bright but is still very pleasant.

Your hammers were bad to begin with and then, having no experience and knowledge, you voiced them with fabric softener and hairspray and you were supposedly satisfied, I remember correctly? So what is your point now?

Yes, you remember correctly. I was somewhat happy with the results. Of course I did an inexperienced job at tuning and also at voicing, but now, I think it got out of tune and voicing did not hold either, it became brighter.

My question actually is in this cases, like in the video above, will a good voicing (by a professional) make that piano sound good, do the hammers need to be changed necessarily or are some particular pianos (because of the soundboard and everyhhing) never meant to sound great?

The first link has a bright piano with a potato for a microphone. The second link has a bright piano and a much nicer potato for a microphone.

A good tech can make it sound great, but remember that a piano will often "settle" back into its natural state over time. So, either frequent attention from a tech, or temporary results, depending on your budget and a tech with the patience to work on your piano often.

tune it, you need good stable tuning, discussion about voicing is absolutely pointless without that

Thanks for the replies.

I am posting a video I took to demonstrate my Petrof.
I bought it used. Its from 1981.

I love the look of the piano, also somehow it is very well kept physically, all the keys are like new, it had almost not been used that much when I bought it.

For the size of the piano, it has a very small sound I find. When played too softly, one can acquire a beautiful sound out of it, somewhat singing tone. However, playing a a bit louder it becomes very clinky-clancky. And its very difficult to play with a singing tone louder. Also, one has to really bang the piano to get a decent forte, which still sounds plastic. Maybe all of this is because its too bright?

Are some pianos meant to be quieter than others?

Heres a video

You might try to tune clean and stable unisons.

After 40 years, things happen to pianos, especially if they have not been serviced beyond tuning. They can often be reversed with tuning, regulation, and voicing.
