I’ve been a piano technician for 30 years and a piano last week humbled me. It’s a 1933 Wheelock baby grand. I cannot get the fallboard to come out! It should just slide up and out like on most grand pianos, but it doesn’t. There is no set screw and nothing that I can see that might be preventing it from coming off the pin. I suppose it could be jammed somehow. Just wondering if any of you have any suggestions.

I don't know about that one, but some grand pianos have fallboards attached to cheekblocks

Attached to cheekblocks was my first thought too.

Does the fall move OK - it opens and closes?

This comes up from time to time...

I believe this is one of those sneaky ones where you need to look at the edge of the fallboard when partially closed. You should see a metal bar with a couple of screws - when the screws are out, the metal bar stays in place and the fallboard slides out when open about halfway.

Good luck!

I second Ron's diagnosis.

Why on God's green earth would a manufacturer design a fallboard like that???

They seemed to be used with fallboards that were very simple, essentially three boards in a Z shape, if you imagine the Z to have all right angles. That would have made them cheaper, and they would have offered more room for spool boxes in players that had the boxes over the keys.

Thank you for the idea, Ron. I’ll definitely look for that when I return to this piano next week. I could feel the groove where the board slides down pins, but it just wouldn’t slide back off. No set screws that I could find,so you’re likely right that it’s attached to a bar or something that is behind it, even though I didn’t see anything.I was probably blinded by frustration, LOL

I've run into a few where only one side slips out but the other doesn't. The side that doesn't move is a peg that is insert. To remove I have to manipulate the one side out far enought to be able to pull the other side to the right and it slips off. Confusing.

The bar fits into a slot on the edge of the fallboard if it is the design I'm thinking about. No set screws, but screws that go through the bar into the wood of the fallboard from the edge. Invisible until the fallboard is tipped down about 45 degrees and you look at the right or left edge.

Good luck!

I ran into one of these today on a George Steck Duo-Art.
