Congratulations!

Do you know how many members have posted and the total number of views?

I looked at the membership a few months ago ... in November I think.

At that time there were 97,483 members. Of those, 90,114 members were not active at any time in 2020. So only 7.6% of members were active in 2020.

I also looked at post counts. I noticed that 50.0% of members have never posted, and 86.6% have posted no more than 10 times.
Code
# POSTS # USERS % OF USERS CUM %
--------- ------- ---------- -----
0 48,705 50.0% 50.0%
1 10,891 11.2% 61.1%
2 7,735 7.9% 69.1%
3-6 12,485 12.8% 81.9%
7-10 4,592 4.7% 86.6%

So the number of members does not reflect forum activity.
It's clear that a small number of members account for most of the activity.
Others here have noted in the past that this is typical of many forum sites.

I'm curious, do you take pleasure in being a killjoy?

I'm well aware that many members never post, I have people email me that they have been following the forums for years but never felt compelled to post.

Many industry professionals follow the forums every day, but choose not to get involved because they don't want to deal with the backlash.

The 100,000 represents members who's accounts are still active, with over 40,000 still receiving our newsletters.
(some people opt out of receiving any communications from us, including the newsletter).

I belong to several forums that I don't bother to post in because I don't have anything worthwhile to add.
I still follow them, or at the very least choose to keep my membership active.
I don't think posting is an indication of whether or not one is engaged. We have plenty of posters who maybe shouldn't be posting quite so much :-)

Then there are the thousands of visitors who come to peruse the forums but don't bother to join.

This is a snapshot I just took of who's online. Note the number of "guests" versus members.
Now some of these guests are actually members who for whatever reason didn't log in, but many of them are just what it says, visitors.

At the time of this snapshot there were nearly ten times as many guests as members.
Guests are still eyeballs on the forums. (guests do not count in the membership totals).

[Linked Image]

And of course there are members who signed up, got what they wanted and rarely come back.

The actual member number in our database is currently 108437, the difference being people who have chosen to close their account or have been banned do not show up in the public totals.

So overall, in spite of your efforts to burst my bubble, I'm still very proud of what I/we have accomplished over the years.

First of all: congratulations to Frank, and everyone else involved here. It's quite a milestone.

Secondly, a quick calculation based on Frank's and MacMacMac's statistical data reveals that 13.4% of the members do 85.8% of all the hard work (i.e. posting)*. smile

If someone wants a summary of what's been said on PW since the beginning, I'm not volunteering. grin

*Assuming that the 86.6% mentioned by MacMacMac have posted on average 5 times each. In reality they probably have posted less.

Member numbers used to appear below your user name with every post. Now it just shows Joined date. But if you go to your main profile info page (not the edit page), your member number appears in the solid bar just above and to the left of your username (or directly above your avatar if you have one).

Thanks for the info. I'm member 10970 - and I joined in May 2005 (but didn't start posting until July 2008). Apparently membership grew exponentially during the past 15 years. Kudos to Frank for his commitment to keeping this going.

Congrats! Milestones are always a fun thing to track smile

I can attest to having been a lurker for a long time before I had piano questions and created an account to ask them.

It was hard enough to pull out the top 50 (without pulling all the other data like email, post counts, etc.)
