indeed if you will to spend 5k EUR on 785 I would really look into hybrid or used uprights at this point. 785 is really nice, but I have no idea who is target audience: it is single piece cabinet iirc, so it's not that portable anymore, and it costs close to used upright in fair condition or hybrids with small discount...

I believe the CLP-685 used the typical upper piano part+lower stand construction. Has this changed to a single piece cabinet (like CA99 and other soundboard-equipped Kawai models) for the CLP-785?

Kind regards,
James

Still looks to be 2 parts (on account of Foxy's photographs and testimony of building it himself!) - not as slick as that gorgeous CA99 cabinet James smile

Yep, sorry, my bad - 785 is two pieces, although still whole stuff weights 130kg which is already the beginning of an acoustic upright territory

Is there anything in 735/745 that gives it a completely different feel and sound compared to their 600 series equivalent?

Last spring I did some comparison tests between CLP-625, CLP-635, CLP-645, LX705, LX706 and LX708. I didn't like the action and feel of the Yamahas at all, the Roland's LX was much more to my liking. As for the sound I did prefer Roland over Yamaha as well across all models, but to my surprise I didn't like the ambience of the LX706/LX708.

So out of all digital pianos I tested the Roland LX705 was the one fancied the most and the one I would've bought if the coronavirus hadn't delayed my plans.

Is the CLP-700 series something that could change my opinion and should I try them out? Or will I still fancy Roland over Yamaha if I did it when comparing the LX-series against the CLP-600 series?

sound did not change much as for me, yes they have made new samples and added binaural bosendorfer - but I did not hear radical difference. But action though was improved much, GrandTouch-S is now as easy and pleasing as Yamaha traditionally heavish keyboards could go.

The 700 series all have completely different key action feel to the 600 series.

I'm afraid not mate. The weight of the CLP-785 (Matte Black) is 86 kgs.

Check the specs out here:

It's actually comprised of three major parts

The top half (heavy)
The speaker unit (heavy)
The frame (rather light)

Here's some pictures of the build, unfortunately, I didn't take a photo once I'd attached the speaker into the frame unit.

I put together the frame and speaker myself - however definitely needed a second person to lift the top half of the piano onto the frame.

Here's some photos.

All up the build took about 20 minutes - Not long to be honest.

Take care.
Foxy.

never going to quote specs again, looks like me degree is not enough to read yamaha website properly from the first try : D

meanwhile, I have just assembled my new 745. It was really easy assembly indeed comparing to Privia px-880, mostly because easier instructions and stuff not falling apart before you screw all together.

ps

funny thing that piano was delivered through whole EU in 4 days, while 10 inch tablet I have ordered same day to use with it from local shop is still delivery date NA...

Congratulations!

Did they include a bench, or do you just prefer the hydraulic adjustable height of an office chair?

no, bench is not included. There was a bundle offer with bench for +50EUR, but I have one from my Casio bundle already. I feel like I prefer bench, but piano is right behind my office desk (you can see monitor in reflection), so using office chair I can just spin 180 and start playing : D Though for longer session I would probably use bench.

Thanks bud! Hope the pictures helped!

yep. 20 minutes max. Plus that was taking my time as well. The pictures and instructions were spot on. Very easy.

Take care mate.
Foxy.

I can't help but laugh in a warm manner my friend regarding your comment re: the weight discrepancy.

love your work! :-)

My importantly CONGRATS on the CLP-745 - it looks amazing! The build of putting together the piano was a cinch. No stress at all.

Keep those photos coming my friend!

So I've reached to Yamaha directly about my local store selling unboxed Clavinovas as new.
They actually not only wrote me back but an official from Yamaha actually called me on my phone.
He explained in no uncertain terms that it was common practice for shops to unbox digital pianos for testing before reboxing them and selling them to us. He said I could ask for the piano to not be used as a demo. But how can I be sure ? The fact of the matter is that a stranger will touch the piano, assemble it in store. How can I know they won't mess something while assembling. How can I assume the piano won't be actually used in store as a demo before they repackage it and ship it to me. NONE. I have no way of knowing. When an official package is unboxed, it is not NEW in my book. I'm livid. But at this point my understanding is that is common practice in the industry. At least for Yamaha. So I'll just have to assume this is the way it is and just live with it.

I don't want to derail the thread. I'm just frustrated by all my discoveries and the general concensus amongst piano dealers in my region.
To his defence, the Yamaha rep said I could ask that the Piano be delivered directly to my home without the store ever unboxing it. But he said that because of the current shortage of units, if I'd ask for this, he believes I would not get a unit for a very long time. I guess the shortage is so bad that dealers only have "demos" to sell because the unbox everything they recieve to showcase to potential clients.

All right lets all go back on topic. Clavinova's 700 series look so very promising. I can't wait to safely be able to buy one.

Mareq, maybe you could check if there are any "online only" stores near you? I ordered mine in the US from piano guys which, to my understanding, does not have a storefront with demo units.

No, no, no ! I received all my keyboards, synths, organs, digital piano's in a factory sealed box. This means with the big original staples in the cartonbox + minimum 2 strapping bands sealed.
I have a CLP785 on order but i told the salesman that i will only accept a factory sealed box, this was no problem for them...

Would you accept a dealer sealed box or is nothing short of factory sealed, ordained, baptized, and certified good enough for you?

The unit also must of made its confirmation. (jk)

Really with all the piano dealers that have gone out of business in the past 10 years, I'm happy that there are still some dealers in my area.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.
