I’m planning music for a “hausmusik” concert and I am wanting to play a group of three Chopin nocturnes to be included on the program. I have four nocturnes in mind but would appreciate any recommendations of ones that would be especially appreciated by listeners who are not familiar with classical music. The age group will probably span 40 to 60. Thanks for any thoughts!

Op 20 post: your listeners would appreciate the several associations of this piece both in movies and in wartime
Op 9 2
? - I have many favorites but not sure what I would recommend for this particular audience

"Music, rich, full of feeling, not soulless, is like a crystal on which the sun falls and brings forth from it a whole rainbow" - F. Chopin
"I never dreamt with my own two hands I could touch the sky" - Sappho

It's ok to be a Work In Progress

I think dogperson means number 20, Op. posthumous, C-sharp minor. It's not Op. 20.

I think any of the Nocturnes might be appropriate, particularly the earlier ones, although I would avoid the later Op. 55, No. 2; and the two from Op. 62. Maybe not the Op. 48, No. 1, although some might appreciate the drama of the middle section if it can be performed convincingly. Most of the others should please the uninitiated to Chopin's piano music.

The three I would choose would be among the following:
Op. 9, Nos. 1 and 2;
Op. 15, Nos. 1 and 2;
Op. 27, Nos. 1 and 2;
Op. 32, No. 1;
Op. 37, Nos. 1 and 2;
Op. 48, No. 2
Op. 72, No. 1 (posth.) and
C-sharp minor, Op. posth. already mentioned.

There's half the collection!

Regards,

BruceD

Thank you both for suggestions in a really productive direction and confirms my instincts about using some of the earlier nocturnes.
Next I’m going to contemplate selecting three mazurkas.

I just listened seriously to nocturnes Op. 55/2 and Op. 62/2——!!!!WOW!!! and actually I think non-classical listeners would be intrigued and very very delighted to listen to these two particular nocturnes as they almost Span Chopin towards Jazz! When I asked a fellow keyboard player (harpsichord, organ, classical improv) to listen to mazurka Op. 17 number four— he remarked “ I see where Bill Evans gets his material“
As I have stepped out of music for 25 years I’ve been slowly reacquainting myself with the literature, and so I thank you both for pointing me towards nocturnes I was not familiar with!

I think any Chopin Nocturne that you play convincingly would be an excellent choice. They are all beautiful, accessible music.
