I’m not new to the piano but I’ve found something I’ve never come across in a music book by Ludovico Einaudi.
In his songs he has a notion that reads “1 C.” or “3 C.” in various sections of the music. I’ve consulted my music dictionary and looked online but I haven’t been able to locate an answer. I’m hoping someone here will know what it’s all about.

Is it the suggested fingering notes?

It's proobably 1C = una corda and 3C = tre corde ("soft" and sustain pedal use)

As I look over the music that looks like a plausible explanation, 1C for using the soft pedal and then 3C for discontinuing the soft pedal.
I was breaking my brain trying to figure out what it meant.

I’m certain now that dorfmouse got it right. 1C refers to using the soft pedal and 3C indicates when to stop using the soft pedal and return to using all 3 strings.

It could certainly be a logical shorthand:

1C = una corda (one string = although on most modern pianos use of the 'una corda' pedal causes the hammer to hit on two strings, while on some others it just moves the action over enough so that the hammer hits all three strings but in an area of the hammer that is less compressed)

3C = tre corde (three strings)
