Hello everyone. I'm considering to upgrade to either Yamaha C2x or C3x. Anyone here who has it- if you don't mind telling me how much should I pay for these pianos out the door? Used vs new? Your experience? I've read old posts but those are 5 years ago. I don't want the dealer to take advantage of me. I understand they have to earn to survive but I don't want too much mark up. I need to be wise with this big tag purchase. Thank you

Check out PianoBuyer.com (link is on the left) for a list of current prices, new, as well as a depreciation calculator which should give you rough guidelines on how to calculate prices of used pianos. However, used prices will depend on more variables than may be in the depreciation calculator - primarily dependent upon condition of a given piano and the current market in your area - but it's a starting point.

While we are on the subject: as a general rule i have observed Yamaha to be slightly higher (10-20%) in price than equivalent pianos from Kawai : i.e an c2x vs a GX2).
I am curious if people think this is justified

Specific to the comparison you use, and for disclaimer, I have a Kawai GX2. The Yamaha C2X is 5 ft 8 inches long. The Kawai GX2 is 5 ft 11 long, so it has longer strings and a larger soundboard that is also tapered (unlike the C2X). The Kawai has longer keysticks and a thicker rim. And it has a modern action that is common across their range including the top-of-the-line SK range. So in this comparison, I do not think the Yamaha deserves a price premium. Disclosure: I bought a C3XSH two years ago at 61%+Tax+Delivery of Pianobuyer Suggested Maximum Price at that time (SMP x 0.61). I'm not a dealer.
I'm in a large piano market on the west coast, and when I was shopping two years ago, I saw Kawai GX2/3 and Yamaha CX2 as low as 50% of SMP, more typically 55-65% of SMP.
I think with the pandemic, the demand for pianos have been higher than the supply, so I won't expect bargains like that.
Best of luck!

I like his videos, but there is definitely a Kawai bias. Note that his review of the C2X occurs at a different dealership! When I was shopping two years ago, I compared two different GX3 and two different C3X over many weeks. I could have bought the GX3 at 10k USD cheaper than the C3X, but I ended up with the Y. Buy the piano that you like.

I recently bought a new C2X. GX2 was about $5.5k cheaper than C2X. Both are great pianos, and I bought the one I like.

I agree both are great pianos (disclaimer: I own a Shigeru Kawai).
However i consider them broadly comparable - so I don’t se the price difference as being justified:
My Shigeru (an SK2 so 5’11” ) cost just a touch more than a c3x - to me that was no contest. An equivalent Yamaha( the slightly larger s3x) Would have Cost much 50% more than the Shigeru.
While taste and personal preference do matter: these pianos are roughly equivalent- so why the difference in price?
Note prices are from About two years ago.

PS - Going by PianoBuyer, we paid 65% of SMP. After that we got 6K for the N2 and 1.5K for the Kawai upright as trade-ins.
Note, we tried many pianos. I also wanted the W. Hoffman T186. It's really nice piano I think. The S5X was also very nice, but much more expensive. Steinway? Tried several at several different locations, couldn't justify the cost over the other pianos.

navi9187, are you buying a brand new Yamaha? How exciting! I see you currently own a C3, how old is it? I bought a 20 y/o C2 last year, but not being an "X" I assume it has the same specs as your C3. I see you have an AvantGrand, a Clavinova and a Yamaha digital piano as well, wow! You must be an even bigger fan of Yamaha than I am! So, owning a C3 as well, how often do you play the hybrid or digital pianos?

Thank all for your input. Let me do the math and this time I would be more confident to bargain around. ShiroKuro- I sold my previous pianos each time I made the upgrade. The signature line was just a history of the pianos I've owned before. Yes, I currently own a C3. I'm still in debate 50/50 if I want a new C3x or just be contented with what I have. They say buy the piano you love that will inspire you but I also have my practical side. New C3x piano is so tempting but thinking of instant depreciation and monthly payments like a luxury car I really have to sit down and think about it seventy times seven. Unfortunately it's so hard to find any second hand Cx's.

In my experience servicing the C3x etc. I think you would be better served upgrading our C3 with better strings and hammers, perhaps WNG capstans and other mass reducing schemes and high quality hammers.

Good point. A set of C3X pre hung hammers can be obtained from Yamaha as well as the bass strings. The cost would be less than the sales tax alone on a new C3X.
