For the purpose of this themed recital, a transcription is "the adaptation of a composition for a medium different from that for which it was originally written, so made that the musical substance remains essentially unchanged". Also called an arrangement or a paraphrase.
One of the great reference books on the piano literature is "The Pianist's Guide to Transcriptions, Arrangements, and Paraphrases" by Maurice Hinson, published by Indiana University Press. It lists classical music transcriptions by composer and transcriber.
One of the greatest transcribers was J. S. Bach. He transcribed concertos for violin and other instruments for keyboard, using the music of Vivaldi and other composers. In turn, Bach's music has been transcribed by many other composers for the piano.
Liszt was also a great master of transcriptions. According to Hinson, Liszt wrote almost 400 transcriptions, everything from songs to Beethoven symphonies.
And don't forget popular music and jazz. Is an arrangement of a song for solo piano a transcription? I think so.
Here are the rules for this recital: 1) Only piano transcriptions/arrangements/paraphrases - you must decide if your choice fits the theme. I do not want to be the judge! You can ask for advice in this thread. 2) Any genre, any style, any period. 3) All skill levels are welcome. 4) Duplicate submissions are fine - we are all unique. 5) Multiple submissions are fine.
This recital is scheduled for April 2021. It will likely open for submissions April 1st and go live April 15th. If you would like to pledge to play something, look at the post after this one.
