Hello,

I am trying to mix a piano sound (Garritan CFX played on Kawai VPC1 using Reaper) with the sound from Yamaha S90ES played simultaneously. The goal is mixing of the sounds as they are, without any change, for a recording. Currently I apply Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 for reducing the latency of the DAW, and want to use it as a mixer as well.

When inserting the audio from S90ES into Scarlett I get either too weak, or too distorted sound of S90ES compared to what I hear from its Phones jack. I tried various cords, jacks, and Focusrite Control presets for sending the audio, but the problem remains.

Did anybody have such a problem?

Do I need an additional mixer? If so, which mixer would you recommend?

Can the mixing be done in the computer? (I apply Dell Vostro 15 5000, i5, Windows 10, 16 Giga RAM, 2 large internal SSDs).

Thank you in advance...
Andrew

Hi,

i had similar problems with a focusrite 8i6.
After deleting all settings and then creating all output channels
from scratch, the problem disappears.

Perhaps this helps

Thank you klausi6,

Can you please tell me:

1: What input jacks of Scarlett 8i6 you applied for inserting the output cords from the external audio hardware? I guess these are unbalanced LINE INPUTS on the back side of the device, since, if I am not mistaken, all other ways of audio input produce unwanted effects like reverb or mic distortion.

2: In order to create all output channels from scratch, how you defined Device Setting and Output Routing in the Focusrite Control interface.

Kind regards,
Andrew

I had especially problems with XLR/TRS Inputs in front of the chassis.
These inputs are described as auto detection inputs.
I connected a piano to this inputs.

So , they should recognize a line input, but this doesnˋt work in my setup.
I switched on the line input button in focus control, but this had no effect.

After i deleted all channels , i created all channels new.
After that the audio interface had a clear sound with the XLR/TRS Inputs.

But i was not satisfied at all with the audio interface.I send back the focusrite 8i6.

Now i use a focusrite 2i2.

Focus rite isn’t a good audio for mixing/live performance. It lacks effects processing which is vital if you want to sound good.

Get a decent digital mixer with compressor/limiter and eq on each channel.

Behringer xr18 can be a good choice but it’s not expandable. Audio interfaces are only good for pre production recording.

Thank for the advice klausi6: after clearing everything (and, most important, rebooting the machine), everything works fine. I have to say that the UI of Focusrite, and the supporting docs, are not too intuitive, at least for me.

Thank you Abdol, now I understand too the limits of Focusrite and will probably follow your advice.

Kind regards,
Andrew
