Hello forum members. I am purchasing my first digital piano. I grew up with a Kawai upright and it was largely the only piano I've played much. I played frequently in my youth, but then stopped and am now trying to get back into playing. For the environment of my home, I need a digital piano for volume control and headphone usage.

I was initially set on buying a Kawai, because that is what I knew, however I was directed to look at Roland as well. I really enjoyed playing the HP704 and decided I would purchase that piano. The dealer is selling it for $2999 USD. When I spoke with the Kawai dealer they made me a counter offer for $3300 on a new CA79.

I did what is suggested and played both. They both feel good to me. I enjoy them both. I'm keen to just save money and stick with the Roland, but I wanted to ask if there was some big obvious thing I would be missing out on, if I pass on the CA79 for almost the same price.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

The main two differences are:
1. The CA79 has longer keys than the HP704 - so make sure you played both up near the fallboard.
2. The key action is lighter on the CA79.

I'd speak with the Kawai dealer and tell them if they can't drop the price to $3,100 you will go with the Roland.

IMO if you like the Roland offer $2700 for it. To me even $3000 is too much money for that model. The Roland has a really nice folded action. The Kawai CA79 is a step up IMO with the GFIII keyboard. Both are nice pianos but the dealer is too high on the Roland.

I think 2999$ is too much for the HP704...
It should be about 2000$, because where I live it is about 1850€...

keep calm and play the piano :-)

I wish but in the USA they are overpriced. I would try to offer actually $2900 tax included. If they don't come down I would really consider the Kawai CA79 unit.

Don't get me wrong I'm one of the folks that likes the Roland modeled sound in the HP704. I was at the closest dealer last fall and was really interested in one but his price was $3100. I offered less and he didn't even counter offer. So I ended up leaving. I had my check book with me too. Now I figure with covid I will wait to try out the new Yamaha CLP745 series. I still have a functional piano to play on so I shall take my time.

I paid $2400 for mine Feb 2020 from a dealer in California. Included the bench and headphone. I have been very happy with it.

To me that is where the piano should be at maybe a little more but the Roland HP704 shouldn't be selling for $3000+

Thank you all for your input. A lot of the feedback here was that the Roland was priced high. After going between the Kawai and Roland dealers again, I was able to get the HP704 offer down to $2600 USD. I'm a lot happier with that price point and I really enjoy that piano, so I'm going to go with that offer. Thanks for your help!

Congratulations! That is more what it should be going for. Enjoy your new piano and remember Santa will know if you don't practice wink

Congrats with the HP704. I had considered that model but ultimately opted for the Kawai CA58 (now the CA59), which is what you should have compared the HP704 with.
The CA79 is more akin to the Roland LX706, in my opinion.

But never mind, enjoy your HP704 !
