The piano would have to be able to output digital audio via the USB socket. Only a few models do that.

And any device receiving it might need drivers. Or is there "class compliant" USB audio?

USB DAC in general is of course a thing and sometimes used with smartphones too as the headphone jack is missing on some models.

1/ Audio USB is only available on few digital piano. 2/ You may need a driver if the piano is not USB compliant. 3/ And most (all ?) audio interfaces are made to connect to a USB host (PC, tablet...) not a USB device. The Audio USB on a piano us typically on the device port.

But what do you want to do ? Linking a DAC to a piano will bring you analog sockets... what most high-end piano already have.

The piano being able to act as an audio source for a computer doesn't mean that it could instead send audio to a USB DAC, even a class compliant one (yes that's a thing). That's just not how USB works.

For a piano to even have a chance at supporting this, you'll need to find one that specifically mentions USB OTG, or has two separate USB ports. Without OTG, you can't get a single port to act as both as a device and a host. (Hosts being what talk to devices like DACs.)

All that said, I'm confident no company bothered to implement this. They've already put DACs into the pianos, that's how you've got the analog outputs. Just use those.

There are other options for output if digital audio-- optical TOSLink or ADAT and SPDIF. Many audio interfaces support one or both if these and can function as a DAC as well as an ADC.

The Quandrasynth Plus Piano was arguably one of the best DPs available for 10 years after its release. It could output 24-bit 48kHz digital audio over ADAT. This is a version with semi-weighted action, but the hammer weighted QS8 was also released shortly after it.

I suspect digital piano vendors stopped outputting digital to protect their digital sample intellectual property.

Moreover, DACs have improved to the point that inexpensive off-the-shelf DAC chips are not a limiting factor in audio quality, so there should br no need to upgrade the DAC chip of a DP today. Get a DP with a line level output if you want low noise output to route to an amplifier or powered monitors etc.

Not logging in very often, but I will receive PMs.
