Like most people (I suspect), the only two paintings of Johannes Vermeer that I knew well until recently were The Milkmaid and Girl with a Pearl Earring (which has been made into a movie, starring Scarlett Johansson......who does look remarkably like the painting).

Then I saw a program about an exhibition of his paintings in London's National Gallery in which many paintings featured musicians playing instruments. Vermeer was one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age, but his paintings are quite unlike Rembrandt's - serene rather than craggy and moody. And no other great artist used musical instruments in his paintings like Vermeer, very much integral to them rather than mere incidental props. Yet he never owned any musical instrument, and died penniless.

Does anyone know of other great artists who painted people playing musical instruments?

Mary Cassatt has many paintings of music and musicians, many of them featuring piano.

Picasso was fascinated by the shapes of musical instruments and painted a lot of them.

There is the famous painting by Renoir

Of course there are a multiplicity of paintings with instruments or people playing.

Thanks for those examples.

I was thinking of getting a poster of a well-known painting to adorn my wall (alongside big high craggy mountains whistle) to show visitors that I'm also a discerning "artistic musician" (alongside my other non-attributes).

Any more musical paintings by great artists?

Definitely Marc Chagall. His Fiddler sings...

Also I love the work he did himself on a Reinhardt Von Nagel harpsichord :
