It seems like stretch tuning is a thing in tuning an acoustic piano, especially those smaller pianos. I found stretch tuning in Pianoteq, but I'm just wondering if stretch tuning exists in, say CFX sampling in Yamaha, and SK-EX sampling in Kawai, and all those sampled VSTs? Or do they sample every note exactly in tune? Also when they sample a piano, do they just use equal temperament?

Piano: Yamaha N3X
VST(preference in order): VSL Synchron Pianos, Vienna Imperial, Garritan CFX, VI Labs Modern U, Ivory II American Concert D, Pianoteq

An acoustic piano doesn’t have a 2x frequency ratio between each octava. This is because of the inharmonicity.

Then I expect virtuel piano or a DP to record such piano when they are sampled or emulate this behaviour when they are modelled.

. . . Or do they sample every note exactly in tune?

With a piano, there's no such thing as "exactly in tune":

. . . If the fundamental frequency of two different-pitch notes
. . . is exactly in tune
. . . (which it can be), the frequencies of the harmonics will be out of tune.

. . . If the harmonics (pick one harmonic, please!) are in tune,
. . . the frequencies of the fundamental will be out of tune.

The job of "stretch tuning" is to establish a compromise between those two cases.

If you want to check whether a DP uses stretch tuning, get "chromatic tuner" software for your smartphone (or get a chromatic tuner, they're cheap enough), and see if the tuner thinks the DP is out of tune in its top two octaves or so:

.. . If the tuner says it's out of tune, the DP is using stretch tuning.

There's extensive coverage of this issue in the "Piano Tuner & Technician" forum. And Googling "stretch tuning piano" will get you an evening's reading.

Digital pianos often do provide various temperaments. The User's Manual or sometimes also the specifications list will mention them.

(*)Probably they are sampled in just one temperament and the samples are then adjusted when you select some other one.

(* Of course they are, but I can't claim to actually know that.)
