How about an idiotproof DP?
Or futureproof?

I was specifically thinking of something a little bit sturdy that I could comfortably hide behind when encountering a particularly raucous audience.

Well, you could add some kevlar plating to the piano.

And if you are worried about yourself then there's some transparent plexiglass type material that's quite bulletproof.
Like they always used in Mythbusters.

bulletproof [ bool-it-proof ] SEE SYNONYMS FOR bulletproof adjective 1)(of vehicles, glass, clothing, etc.) capable of resisting or absorbing the impact of a bullet.
2) Informal. safe from failure; without errors or shortcomings and beyond criticism: a bulletproof system; a bulletproof budget.
I took the OP as referring to definition #2, not #1

Casio PX-S3000 Nope, no issues with it at all. Took lessons from 1960 to 1969, stopped at age 16. Started again in July 2020 at age 67. Lots more fun now!

Perhaps it is too hard or too costly to design a DP without shortcomings. Trying to avoid shortcomings bring us the the NV10 with a real action, the key weight depending of the pedal, Onkyo amplification, nice control display, etc. If you want a portable piano, Piano Phoenix is designed to avoid shortcomings (a 1300 velocity resolution, 2x120W + 180W with Focal speakers - a wellknown speaker maker, battery included, foldable) and it costs only 12000€. . And no two people will agree on which feature is needed. Some are happy with a simple black and white LCD display, some will say hey! Why haven’t we got the high resolution color display of our phones ?
