But sound was totally different when I listened someone else played my grand. Also grands sounded very directly if I remove music rack.
Generally tall upright sounded better to me as a player. Also upright sound was better when it recorded.
Grand piano sound was quite different depending on the time played, or weather. I am not sure it's just because of my feeling but upright was quite consistant.

Doesn't this mostly depend on the size and make of the baby grand and the size and make of the upright?

Tony Your thread a few days ago stated a grand piano was your dream and you didn’t think you would be happy with a quality upright.
Please take your time and don’t quickly jump to conclusions about what you will buy. Plover is correct: you shouldn’t make a general assumption about upright vs grand. Compare individual pianos.

This post just my opinion. Nothing to do with buying upright or grand. I still prefer grand piano. I should wait until February next year. I am awaiting Feurich 179 arriving to NZ. It's not easy decision. Even though if there is any super duper sounding upright, I still prefer grand piano as the sound is not all for me. I cannot neglect visual pleasure
I am just thinking between Kawai GX2 and Feurich 179. Many of this site seem quite critical to other people's opinion.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and your process in choosing a piano. Apologies, but the post was meant in a helpful spirit. It won’t happen again.

Free, good advice hard to come by these days. Actually there's quite a lot of it available here I find. There is a bit of bad advice as well sometimes but hopefully that gets called out so that folks don't get misled too much. I haven't found a way of doing anything about the 'free' bit yet :-)

Buy one of each, an upright and a grand. That way you'll have the best of both worlds. Rick

I haven't found a way of doing anything about the 'free' bit yet :-) There is often a great deal of advice given coloured by personal feelings and subjectivity. It is very difficult to advise people for example to buy a tall upright or small grand., If a person wants a small grand and not an upright, it is better that they get that. If however during thier piano search they truly "discover" a really nice upright then they should be encouraged to buy that piano. Well that is what I believe, I think....

There are reasons why both small grands and tall uprights are available. Sure, the string length in a small grand is probably going to be shorter than a tall upright, and the small grand might be acoustically inferior, but the pianist might need a grand piano action.
About 6 years ago at Steinway London, I had a brief conversation with the sales person about that very thing - the Boston GP178 I think, was at that time the same price (in pounds sterling) as the Steinway Model K (Hamburg). The sales person said that it wasn't for her to make a choice for which one a customer should buy, but that she believed the Model K to have a superior sound since, at the end of the day, it is a Steinway, but that if a professional pianist asked where they should put their money, she'd encourage them to buy the Boston GP178 so that they were practising on the grand piano action.
Granted, a GP178 is not that small, but it is a case that (slightly) illustrates the point

Doesn't this mostly depend on the size and make of the baby grand and the size and make of the upright? Bingo!! Plus of course the opinion of the buyer/player. Some small grands can and do sound lovely such as older Baldwins and Steinway’s. Some tall uprights are performance rated and do sound better than a small grand. These uprights typically cost more than most of the baby grands.
