I read of this unit recently and I am a bit intrigued by it. If you use one, do you like the built in acoustic piano sounds it gives? Is a computer necessary to run this module? How do you like it in general?

One thing a member here mentioned to me was that sound modules were popular years ago, but then came along powerful personal computers.... able to run VST software. This kind of thinned the market on the sound modules. Which made a lot of sense to me.

I am in the process of trying to achieve a pleasing acoustic piano like sound, pleasing to me, on my Kawaii CA 79. I have a LOT to learn.

Thank you,
Muskie

Hi Muskie,

I looked into Dexibell last year but don't actually own this module but you don't need a computer to use it, just connect MIDI via USB.

if you already have a decent laptop or even an iPad Pro, I think software would be the way to go.

With the "SK-EX Rendering" you already the best that Kawai can currently offer.

What Dexibell might have to offer is different. Not necessarily better in a technical sense.

They have sound samples on their website. There are "regular" and "Platinum" sounds. You can't have all the Platinum sounds at the same time. Platinum demos:

https://www.dexibell.com/dxs/Preview/EXP_Japan_PLT.mp3

https://www.dexibell.com/dxs/Preview/EXP_French_PLT.mp3
https://www.dexibell.com/dxs/Preview/EXP_Upright_PLT.mp3

And of course some amount of adjustment is available.

Djvu,
That’s one issue. Currently, I only own an iPhone and iPad air2.Perhaps a MacBook may be in my future.

Thank you, Clotheared, I’ll have to listen these sounds.

I have a Mac and 3 PCs in my studio but love the convenience of using my iPad Air 2 so I updated to the 12.9" iPad Pro for a larger screen but there's nothing wrong with using an iPad Air 2; you just need the camera adapter to connect it to your CA-79.

There are many IOS apps, including some free ones. Korg Module Pro is only $19.99 right now and has some nice pianos, electric pianos and organ sounds. Maybe try something like that before spending hundreds. If that does the job, maybe an iPad is also much cleaner than a laptop or sound modules on top of your piano.

Really, Djvu, I can get decent sounds on my DP using my air2 and some apps? Very interesting. Like I said, I have a LOT to learn about DPs.(even more to learn about just plain playing it.lol) I’m pretty sure I already own the camera adapter cable. I believe this is the one I needed to upload CA79 software latest versions onto a USB thumb drive. I also have a ‘lightening’ to midi usb (looks like a phone plug jack). I would think this is the cable I would need to run apps from my iPad to the CA79.... lightening plug to iPad, then usb midi plug to the CA79?

That’s the beauty of this forum..... it gives me instant access to experienced DP players around the world. Amazing! Even better, I found most members here are very generous in sharing their knowledge. Taking the time to read and respond to my various posts.....This is something I’m grateful for and appreciate very much.

I use a ipod touch 7 as sound module.
Ravenscroft 275 is a nice piano.
Also korg module offers a lot of sounds and functions,
but a lot of them are iap and some are a bit pricey. So I wait for the next sale every time before buying a new option.
My most used setup is using aum as audio unit host with these plugins:
- Ravenscroft 275
- korg module
- NeoSoul keys
And numerous effect plugins.

If any one is wondering how does the SK-EX Rendering compare with Dexibell e.g. here's a list of demos from Kawai:

Those are CA98/CA78 SK-EX Rendering demos. The CA99/CA79 SK-EX Rendering has been improved further:

Kind regards,
