When describing the upcoming Kawai ES920 on Kawai's website it states that the action has "redesigned key switches". What exactly does this mean and is it comparing it to the previous ES8 and if so what was wrong with the ES8's action?

I think there were problems with ES8 actions (and other Kawai models), may be with switches. Sorry if I'm not sure, I haven't followed the subject.
But there are relative threads in this forum, so please have a look and search !

I owned an ES8 and found that they would periodically (6-12 months) need maintenance because a key (or more) would stop sounding now and then or would "bang" now and then.

Hopefully, that is what made it necessary to "redesign" them.

BTW .... I would not hesitate to purchase another ES8 because the sound and key action was so good I would be willing to deal with the key problem periodically.

I have the ES920 on order.

Yes, it seems the contact strips (silicon with carbon-silicon contacts) were redesigned as well as the circuit boards where the strips go over. It hopefully fixes some issues (clicks and artifacts described by dmd).
