Notice anything not quite right here? I think sometimes the finer points escape some of the DIY beginners... a functionality is present here. However, an angle of a hammer is larger than necessary here. In a 3-string chorus a hammer will not have good hammering to all strings .

But seriously, I have seen grand hammers fitted in an upright and vice versa! Nick

I should have said only odd ones, not whole sets. Some poor chap up against poverty probably. Nick

Seems to me some creative genius was trying to compensate for loose pinning. I bet when the pianist complained about how difficult it is to play he replied "Nothing in life worth achieving is easy".

Looks to me like someone has mounted 87 of the hammers the wrong way round...... That's what baffles me when I see DIY attempts like this. Also with string coils wound over the top of each other. Either way... When you have 87 (or 215, for tuning pins) examples of how to do it right (or at least how it was done at the factory), how can a person not get it?!? It's one of those marvels of the universe that I continue to be amazed at but have discovered that it happens with certain regularity.

Have you heard of alcohol? Research indicates that it dulls the senses. Still relatively new research though requiring more thorough investigation. 😎🤡

For the record, I have seen this particular method of installing a hammer on another grand piano, although it is more common on uprights.
