I have 32 GB and normally I try to never play with more than 4 mics. To be honest, it is not necessary to have more in live playing. I play with a total of 4ms latency. Never had any glitches and can play quiet pieces with 5,6 mics simultaneously without a problem.

I use a 8GB fir the VSL Lite pianos. It is ok but I can’t load an other application like Firefox. Then 16GB for the full VSL will surely be ok.

Harpuia, David B, Gamma1734, Frédéric L’, et. al.,

Thank you for everyone’s advice. Have ordered 32 GB RAM from OWC, and a 1 TB Thunderbolt 3 external drive is also on the way.

Looks as though I am committed to giving the Synchron Bösendorfer a try. Even contemplating the older Vienna Imperial given the upcoming sale price - boy this can sure get out of hand.

Everyone take care. Will be in touch.

Scott

Hello Everyone,

Purchased both the Synchron Bösendorfer Imperial and the D-274 using the VSL Black Friday sale prices. So far, so good. I am not a Pianoteq hater, but (at least initially) I find the Syncron pianos seem to have more depth & fullness to their sound.

I have been experimenting with the mixer and the different mics setting provided in the full library. I have minimal knowledge in music engineering & production, so this question may have an obvious answer, but: What does the Room-Mix mic/control actually control? What is its purpose? Is it a mic? I do not see it on the mic position diagrams on the VSL web site, nor have I found an explanation reading the manuals. I have a feeling I am missing something obvious.

Hope I am not breaching posting etiquette by continuing to post on the older ‘NEW: VSL Synchron Bösendorfer Imperial’ thread vs the newer ‘VSL Black Friday Deal’ thread. But because this is a technical question related the the Synchron pianos, I went with the older thread.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the useful information you provide on this forum.

Scott

Room Mix is just a mix of the room mics. It's easier on the system resources than using lots of room mics.

Thanks johnstaf.

Here is a song utilizing the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand. I’ve followed example or our venerable johnstaf, and I am only using a few mics. IMO, there is wisdom in this. The Bösendorfer has such a powerful sound that less ends up being more so to speak. I’ll show screenshots of my settings at the end of the video.

God Bless,
David

David, the sound is really nice but I am amazed at your steady progress at the piano, not just at technical level but also the harmonic language you use, because AFAIK you're going through a course learning how to harmonize songs (am I right?) and I especially like how you are feeling it, how you're putting nice sus7 and add9 chords with a much more choral type of voicing (compared to what I remember a year ago where you would simply arpeggiate the chord tones), with a feel and interesting rhythmic pauses and with some bass movements and so on. You're not rushing it this time, but instead leaving it entirely to the feel and as a result it's a very coherent playing. This is exactly the way you told me you wanted to play and I think you are approaching it at an unbelievable pace! That's nothing short of amazing. Congrats!

Thanks. Yes, this is a song from the Duane Shinn Praise and Gospel Course. The song is Precious Memories, and it carries a beautiful message. Therefore, it's easy to feel moved emotionally when playing it. I was actually going to record this song with the internal N1X CFX sample because I think it's easier to control dynamically, but it just doesn't sound as good as this VSL sample.

I wish the VSL Bösendorfer had the same playability as the internal N1X samples. I find myself practicing with the N1X sample but recording with VSL. However, after doing that, it takes a bit of time to get accustomed to the VSL sample. Thanks for the encouragement.

God Bless,
David

Absolutely beautiful sound, and really loved your playing as well. Very well played, with a real good feeling. Bravo!!

The Bösendorfer Imperial is my favorite VSL offering. However, it wasn't until I started following johnstaf's advice and using less mics that I really got closer to the sound I was looking for.

It's interesting because I have a patch from a forum member (karvala) for VSL's CFX that utilizes 6 mics and it sounds pretty good. However, when I try to do that with the Bösendorfer, it gets too big and muddled. It's like the Bösendorfer has to be tamed (with less mics) because it's a wild beast. smile I'm sure there are good BI patches out there using more mics, but to my ears it does seem like less provides clearer articulation with this sample.
