Piano world has added an “op” after my user name. I wasn’t sure where to ask this question, but does anyone know what it means?

If I am not mistaken - and I have check this on several different threads - "OP" after your name means that you are the "Original Poster" in a thread. You have started the thread and each time you post in that same thread, "OP" appears opposite your name.

In a thread in which you responded but did not originate, you won't see "OP" after your name.

If you should add other posts to a thread which you originated, the "OP" will again appear each time in that thread, reminding others that you are the originator of the thread.

Two of my life-long best friends were English majors. After taking a linguistics class they complained that apparently the computer industry was spawning new slang and jargon faster than any other phenomenon in history! That was back in the 90s, and probably still true.

Gesualdo was a rather radical composer (and important) of the Rennassance. He was an aristocrat and actually found his his wife and lover together.His wife was slain right there by him. I am not sure about the lover . He spent his life in guilt in the veneration of some saint or other ,and in composition.
His music is both profound and exquisite with daring chromatisism for his time.( which I do not like to admit but it
is true )
I just thought the OP would like to know.
In the recorder group we play in we often play music by Gesualdo but we never mention these unpleasant facts.

If much or any of his composing took place on the harpsichord, the "tuning" style of that time would have sounded very harsh and screechy in the remote keys. Could be a reflection of the type of life he was living. I'm sure that his childhood was not a happy one. Perhaps he even had mental/emotional issues.

Actually mentally ill people usually are more victims of violence than violent people. Gesualdo is an interesting person .He probably was a rather spoilt aristocrat , he had too
much control in his life to be seriously mentally ill. I think he probably was a real narcissist with real personality problems.

I agree the chromatisism is related to personal feelings. If his life was seriously chaotic, I would believe he was mentally ill. It seems near the end of his life there seemed to be either remorse or fear of divine punishment.He was a beleiver
in God and this is disturbing to us.Yet in that time everything was spiritual. No Darwinism, no science which would disturb a simplistic view of religion.
He was highly gifted and yet he had this side to him where he would kill if he was hurt and humiliated.He knew what he did was wrong. His depression in later life I think is logical , he began to see he was not invincible.
All this is a pity as his music is so beautiful and moving.
Perhaps we romanticize these composers because of the moving quality of their music.

Of course this murderer wrote quite an amount of Christian Church music as well .

And that's why you see OP against your own name, and you never see it against anyone else's name (unless you were looking over their shoulder while they were on PW).

I've never heard his music, what piece would you recommend listening to?

That's not the way it's working on this side of the pond. or at least, not on my computer. I see "OP" against the name of every member who starts a thread and again each time that member adds another post to a thread s/he started. I do not see it against my own name unless I start a thread.

Here is what I think is one of his Motels. The score is shown so you can see he goes far beyond just using a model structure . The music is very full of emotion , and personal feeling .Strange for a composer of that time.
