Trying to help a student shop around for pianos. Does anyone know approximately how much a late 90's Yamaha U1 MSRP/SMP might have been? We want to make a fair offer that reflects what it cost, its use, and current market value of our area.

Thank you for any help smile

Current market value depends upon a number of things to which we cannot attest:
- condition of the piano - to be determined by a technician's inspection
- desirability and availability of the particular model in your area
- how much the purchaser is willing to pay

In 2005 - as far back as my copies of The Piano Book go - a new U1 sold for US$8,190.00. At that time, The Piano Book was not listing MSRP and SMP. Their listed price was a "... standard or normalized list price computed from the published wholesale price according to a formula commonly used in the industry."

Regards,

Thank you, that was the info I was looking for.

Sorry I didn't mean to ask for SMP as I know there are many variables with that.

Thanks again

I believe what Bruce gave was the SMP but it may not have been called that at that time. What he quoted as the definition of the price is basically the definition of SMP.

But what I think you should use is the current SMP and the depreciation schedule in the current Piano Buyer. That is the way Piano Buyer suggest one can find the approximate value of a used piano. The MSRP for any year is irrelevant to the original pricing or current value.
