Hi - Sorry if this subject is duplicated but I have searched the forum and only found the NU1x loud note problem. I was looking at the reddit forum the other day and someone commented that the NV5 also has the 'loud note' problem along with the Yamaha NU1X. Has anyone who owns the NV5 had this problem ? I would be interested to know as I have ordered one which should arrive around Christmas or just after. Thanks.

PS The Reddit topic is https://www.reddit.com/r/piano/comments/gj0wv4/yamaha_avant_grand_nu1x_pe_digitale_piano/

No, the NV-5 should not have this problem at all (and I don't think it's ever been reported here).

The reason it happens on the NU1/NU1X is because that piano uses key sensors, which forces it to "guess" whether the hammer strikes; and while it's quite good, it inevitably gets it wrong sometimes, him a way that results in a false positive (a loud note).

The NV-5 has sensors directly on the hammers, so it knows with certainty whether to sound a note with the right velocity from a true hammer strike.

There are pluses and minuses with both systems, but that's the gist of it.

As the OP on reddit describes it, his "loud note" problem is a mechanical "plock" noise from the action. He wrote "someone else in the room can hear this when you're playing with headphones". So the person who does not wear the headphones hears it, i.e. the person who doesn't hear the piano sound. Meaning that it's not a loud "note" at all, as it is not generated by the sound engine (like the NU1's loud note), but is simply something in the mechanical mechanism that makes a noise. Probably something that can be fixed by a technician.

Ah...of course! Why did I not think about that! I must admit the mechanical action on my NU1X also sounds quite noisy. But many thanks for this, simple as it seems.

I checked the Reddit post in question but could not see any mention of "loud note problem", then I saw JoBert's post and understand the confusion.

Anyway, I don't believe there should be any cause for concern regarding the NV5.

Kind regards,
James
